Wheel color suggestions - Brush? Jeem? Others?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Harrison, Mar 9, 2006.

  1. I'll be needing tires sooner than later and when I do I'll be going with big & little blackwall 'Stones. I want to powdercoat my wheels when I do this. I'm sticking to a 'moonshine coupe' look with this car so I can't do anything too loud as far as color goes.

The paint is a dark green. When/if it ever gets repainted I'll either go back green or switch to black. This will never be a "look at me" street rod or even an "in your face" hot rod. Subtle is the key here.

Would some of you who know more about art, color, and what works visually care to offer suggestions on wheel color. I don't think I'll run trim rings after I powdercoat the wheels and wouldn't be against running without hubcaps from time to time. I love wide fives without caps.

I like orange wheels on dark color cars but don't think that will work considering the look I'm after. I thought about a deep red, charcoal, or black. Another thing to consider, my hubcaps are stainless over a steel cap. This steel cap has about a 3 inch band around the stainless center. Whatever color the wheels go, this band should also match.

    Any suggestions? Jeem? Brush? Others?

    TIA, JH

Dark green to match the car. Would still look good if you make the car black.

Or I can agree with everyone else and say black.

  5. Black is king, for sure, but if you're feeling bold........

Dark 'Chocolate Brown', or, bolder still....see the light greeny brown on the border of this HAMB page......that would work really well.

If you were to use a more 'common' colour like red or green, I think they would be a bit to over powering, hence the 'earthy' colours........

Even a tan/off white would be great....

    Cheers,

    Drewfus:)

So you think only Brush or Jeem have good taste?.....oh you said "others" too.

Guess the "others" is my cue to add my superb artistic sensibilities to your vision.

Be warned however, that my taste is much more superb than Brush's or Jeem's. When I design, its like FUNG SHWAY for your car.

    Lets begin:

    ....orange wheels.....check.......

.....moonshine hauler.....check..... O.K. I'm with you so far.....

Here's what I'm seeing. Go ahead and use those orange wheels....matter of fact, paint the whole car orange then add an 01 on the doors and a rebel flag on the roof. :D

I dare you to try an imagine a more traditional moonshine hauler.
    ;) :D :D

    Am I good or what?

    Oh yeah, in all seriousness...
It already looks great. Why change anything?

Wheels should be black....if you need an opinion.

Matter of fact the whole car needs to be dark to be a shine hauler. I believe they wanted their cars to be hard to see in the dark. Dark green is good.

  8. Terra Cota.

Orange is just about straight across from green on the color wheel. That would "pop" but that's not what you asked for. so terra cota.

Or black. Always looks right in b&w photos

  9. If you are looking for color suggestion's, I would do them the color you had on your RPU. Black would look good also for that really low key look.

    Just my 2 cents,

I'd do a Burgundy with a metallic base, really light (butter-cup) yellow oor a dark green metallic base color. Just another opinion.

I'm ALMOST in the fabulous "200" club! ......I can't wait!

  15. I 'm leaning towards Black.. but that could be because i just did mine for my 53 in black

    What about....

    BLACK

No caps or rings, and chrome lug nuts.

  18. Thanks for all the input guys. Those making the list so far are (in no particular order):

    Black
    Gunmetal Gray/Charcoal
    Chocolate Brown
    "Harrison's RPU" Green

    Please keep the suggestions coming.

    Thanks, JH

Well, you do NOT ask me........you knew I would say RED:D

Bootleggers wanted their cars to blend in and not be real noticeable........but so many folks back then had red rims.......a Moonshiner could run them and not stand out.....

Well I would suggest taking the body color paint and skimming it down a few shades(values).that would completely understate the total look and it would not scream at you. That would be my suggestion.
    Black is timeless.
Deep burgundy or oxblood would be a choice as well.
Are you keeping the wide whites? If so.drop the trim rings.
what ever choice you decide, i would keep it on the low key scale.
    nice ride.

  21. Brush,

I'll be running blackwalls & no trim rings.

The chocolate brown, deep burgandy, oxblood suggestions are really turning me on. I think I'd prefer to not do a green or black. As understated as I'm shooting for, I'd still like a little contrast.

    Thanks, JH

You absolutely can't go wrong with black, but I am going to throw you for a loop here and suggest an ivory bone color... Nothing too bright... I think it would look great against the green and would look even better in the future when you can pain the firewall and steering wheel to match...

English white or a vanilla cream....with warm hues to contrast off the green(cool value)

  25. What he said...

Dark green was used because it looked black at night, but green during the day. I'd say black or dark green, no chrome lugs, and a set of caps in the trunk to put on and off when you aren't hauling.

But if the moonshine runner aspect isn't important, like other have been saying, cream, celery green, or maroon.

You might want to play with this thing too.

I really can't argue with anything I've heard. How's that for a cop-out?! The first thing that popped into my head was a celery green with no rings and just the caps with matching body color green stripes on the outer rim but if you're not digging on the greenish hue, I'm really likin' the ivory cream color, just not too yellow! I like Dr. J's copper suggestion, am I wrong for that?! Then again black is always good, slammed car with black wheels n' blackwall 'stones and no rings, just caps, Damn mean (as cool as Ryan's car is, I always thought blackwalls would be a cool look too)!

Basically it boils down to, if you want your car to be on the subtle side, everyone's suggestions here are very valid....

With blackwalls, I am going to say keep them green.

I bet you thought I'd say black didn't you? I am suprising even myself.

Ok, my second choice is black.

Be careful with powder coating. I heard that if you powder coat the tire seats, the surface is slippery which can cause the tires to rotate on the rims which could be very dangerous if you had to stop suddenly! Imagine applying the brakes and then suddenly the tires started slipping. Not only would you not stop, but you'd probably rip off your valves causing a sudden loss of air!

  30. I'm not an expert on picking matching color. But, I painted the steelies on my coupe Ford garnet Maroon, along with the dash and garnish moding and I dig it.
You could use the moroon, flatten it a little and get the blend you want. Black and maroon, classic side by side.
