Can someone please confirm to me in which area of the ch***is these cars differed in wheelbase? I'm guessing forward of the cowl? Where/ how did they stretch the Merc the 4 or so inches? I'm working on an art job.. need to know. Replies appreciated, thanks..
The Mercury is 118 wheelbase while the Ford is 114. The wheelbase on the Mercury is all forward of the cowl. Prewar models have Mercury still 4 inches longer than the Ford but the extra length was in the body from the cowl back. As an aside Canadian Mercurys were built on the Ford ch***is and called Mercury 114s. They had Mercury grilles slightly modified and '47/'48 Ford parking lights.
I'm working a convertible, so your info works for me, thank you Deucemac. We had a few rare Mercury utes down here (along with the Ford utes), I'm guessing the Merc utes were 118" with cowl stretch. Ford Australia sourced ch***is through Canada. I've seen one Merc ute (Graeme Mudford, street rod). To say it was desirable is a big understatement. Resto Rod, dark grey on nice ch***is with polished Americans. The perfect ute in my eyes.
I have a canadian 46 Monarch (118 in wb). All the length looks to be in the front fenders / hood area, specifically added length behind the front wheel opening.
