So ... with Spring just around the corner, I am starting to think about rims for my '53. Car is painted Candy Metallic Blue with Silver Metallic accents (underhood trim, gravel pan, etc.). The goal of the car is to keep it an "ala-50's" vintage hot rod. Have a dual Offy intake for my 215, Barker Hi-Lifts and will add a Smithy muffler. Plan to do a 3" drop here soon and the rattle can flat black is wearing off the stock rims. My current ideas are: Flat Red stockers w/SS OEM dog dishes (kinda cliche with the red?) Full Moon Covers 15" rims with '54 Ford OEM full covers Some other 50's cover like the 3 or 4-bar spinner Screw 50's and put 17" Foose Legends on it Pics would be helpful!
well in keeping with the old style the foose wheels kinda blow that idea out of the water . seems like now evry one and there buddy has the old torque thrust now . i got 2 of those on my wall . ive got a set of 5 daisy wheels or 200s for mine . not seen to many of those going around . i had a red wall put on mine but you can have almost any color you want put on . luckily i have a buddy that has a bunch of old wheels . and is good with putting newer wheels and diffrent stuff together to get diffrent looks. he also gave me something ive never seen before . and they are new . they are made by crager and they are made to go with original steel wheels and cover the centers . the lug nuts hold them on . mine are ford pattern for 14 inch wheels . pretty rare and cool . i went to his house last summer with my car and we tried several wheels on it till i decided on these .
chrome reverses, or single flipper bar hubcaps, get rims black with spider caps. Its what your taste is.
To anyone wondering about wheel/tire combos- don't mess around with doing things manually OR jump into buying something when you're not sure! Pay a visit to "the photoshop thread to end all photoshop threads" and ask to have someone do some combos for you- or ask me, I can do it for you. Please supply pics of what you would like to see. Craigtone- not sure what shade of blue you have, but I love the steelies with a little flair. Fogged! Or, painted steelies w push-through bullet center caps, bullet lugs, and beauty rings (less expensive than the spider caps w the same look).
Take a look at my album pictures. I have two sets of wheels that I run on my 53. My mood decides which ones to run depending on the cruise or rod run.
Rim: Wheel: Smack in the head: haha. i put 15x7 torque thrusts on mine after i saw them on a 56 olds and thought i had to have this set up..... i get alot of compliments from ppl but all the "traditional" guys think it looks bad. lol i love the look. but its just another idea. PRO WHITE WALLS!
Most of the guys on here know that I am a stickler for era-correctness. Not that you need to be, but that's where I'm coming from. You mention that you are going for a "50s" vibe. I would recommend that decide what part of the '50s your car will represent, and that you do some research as to what wheel/tire combinations are appropriate for that era. The "little books" are a great source of information as is Rik Hoving's great custom car site here on the HAMB. If you spend enough time researching, you'll see that there are distinct "eras" and even geographical differences in styles within each era. It's a lot easier to make correct parts choices...choices you won't regret having made later...if you have a good idea of what your car is going to look like when it's finished before you start spending $$$. BTW: In my opinion, there are no "wrong" choices, it's just that some choices are better than others. Good luck!
50's as in generic 50's ... not getting into regions, etc. I am home sick with a fever, so was surfing eBay and found these. Leaning towards these now as the bullet will complement the '53 grille.
The '57 Lancers are always a good choice, in my opinion. They were VERY popular back in the day and still look great!
I sombrero's, too! They were not at all popular in my area, though. Prolly had something to do with the lack of Cadillacs! Midnight Auto Supply couldn't sell what they couldn't get! 1954 Chevy discs, '55 Olds non-spinner and, of course, '56 Olds Fiestas were very much "in", as were the low cost chrome accessory hubcaps from Western Auto called "moons", with or without the single bar flippers.
I went with stock wheels, 51 Ford dog dishes and wide beauty rings that I got off of ebay for $35.00 a set.
Hey Rayj - that's nice and just about same I'm doing on my '56 except I painted the wheels black. $35 for those trim rings ain't bad. I'm debating getting a set too. They look sharp with red wheels. I have a set of caps like yours, and a set off a '60 so will probably switch back & forth. I like those 1" WSW tires too. Ron
I saw this on Google images: rides.webshots.com/photo/1072547057046105792VlcAqL you will have to type it in and click on it.
