When are oversize kingpins needed?

Rebuilding the front end and brakes on a 1964 F100. The wheel could rock up and down quite a bit so I bought a new kingpin set.

After removing everything and knocking out the old bushings from the spindle I test fit the new kingpin in the axle and it's got some play.

Should I buy an oversize kit and have the axle bored or honed to fit? I plan on bringing the spindles to get the bushings honed anyway. NAPA said they'd let me exchange them when I bought the kingpins since I wasn't sure which ones to buy.

    Any advice is appreciated, Thanks!

Some guys have had good luck heating the end of the axle, and whacking it in with a hammer. Then let it cool, and ream the hole to the original size.

Or get the oversize pins, and ream it oversize.

Either way you need to ream it.

    Edit:
I removed my own comment when I realized you were talking about the axles, not the spindles.

Do what Squirrel is suggesting. Heating and using a hammer with an old king pin in it. You will still have to ream and hone when finished no matter which option you choose.

Thanks for the info. NAPA said they'd exchange for the oversize kit so I think I'll just have the axle reamed and honed since I don't have the tools and have to bring the spindles to a shop to get honed anyway.
( after I press the new bushes in ).

I would get the axle reamed and bushed to standard size. That way it will be standard size for next time.
