there was a post recently about 40s, 50s and 60s style that evolved into a small personal message conversation between myself and 40studedude in regards to when these things first popped up. i had no idea myself, and have to defer to the studedude's personal experience. i just always thought "hey, they're 60s style" vaguely from what i have seen on here and other places. not much material for research where i am, sorry. so here's the question. when did astros come out, and are the cars with astros on here un-trad, then? or perhaps they were more of a west-coast thing until breaking big nationwide later on? any ideas?

Someone on here said Astro's aren't true 60's style. Personally, I don't give a shit. I'm still going to run a set on my car.

I think it may have been Hemi who said Astros were not used extensively in the 60's.....I MAY BE WRONG THO!!!!
I know he said that Cragar ss's came out in '64 or so.
It runs in my mind that somebody on here said that Astro Supremes came out sometime right after that...I don't know though??

I think Cragar ss were used more. But again I can't be sure. I WASN'T around till the 70's were well underway....

I have said it before and I will say it again. Cragars rock. To me they ARE the 60's. But Astros look good too.

I haven't helped a damn bit to answer your question... [IMG]

This is a Waaay Cool topic [IMG]
I know I have seen Astro "Supreems"(?)advertised in one of my `63 Hot Rod mags. I have been to much into Halibrand-Wheels for the last 25 yrs, so When I started lookin`for a neat set of wheels for my Rivi , I kinda`got my Memory back [IMG] [IMG] . Five spoke wheels : Gragar & Keystone was the only 5-Spoke wheels available in Scandinavia back in the seventies, So I guess they became a bit too common to be "Cool".They where mainstream , But now they ain`t (?) ( Growing on me ) So I am considerin`a set of Cragars`for my Riv. Both Fenton & E/T had VERY fine lookin`5-Spokes back in the sixties. Some was Steel-Rim with Alu-center , Later 1`s was All Alu .As far as I know , the Halibrand 5-Spoke wheel is a "New" piece not available in the sixties/Seventies .The American Racing wheels are by FAR the most famous 1`s , and it`s a sience of it`s own to know the various styles & History apart.
BTW .. I have probably forgot some Wheel-Names worth mentioning, so it would be cool if we could share [IMG]
    If ChromedRat doesnt`mind , that is ....

These are the Astro slot's.In Andy Southard's book "Rods and Customs of the 1960's" there is a photo of Junior Conway's '58 Tbird with them.Southard's coment in the book says the photo was taken in February 1964 and that the wheels were new on the market. So late '63 early '64 for Astro's.....

thanks fellas. so there is quite a bit of evidence that astros were around at least somewhat in the 60s? maybe they were just really hard to find in areas, well, kinda like now for me because i haven't the faintest idea where to find a set without using a catalog! and there's something else i learned, astro made slot mags as well as supremes. cool looking slots.
