Bought a nice TR1 intake with rochester carbs and linkage last weekend.. Crabs looks like they are rebuilt.. I have always loved the box styling of this intake and believe the TR1 stands for TunnelRam 1 (first series) that Eldebrock manufactured. Does anyone know when they first came into production.. Here is a pic

why would you rebuild crabs after you're done eating them?

Boones, Does that one have the runners coming up into the lower half of the box like they were free standing? Meaning do they have open space around the runners ( an open cavity surrounding them).
If so it's one of the very early productions of that manifold. A problem with them is that gas from flooding or over rich condition collects in the cavity surrounding the runners and a backfire turns the manifold into a bomb. Not a pretty sight if conditions are right.
I witnessed one of the first ones on a radical 327 in a "55 pontiac running in Modified production. The engine was prepped by Diamond Engine Service in Detroit. Apparently gas from a flooding carb collected in the cavity and a backfire blew the intake in half. Lucky one one had their head in the engine compartment when it happened.
subsequent models of this manifold had the box raised so the runners terminated at the floor of the box and didn't extend up into that space. I saw a couple of early examples with the cavity filled (possibly with Devcon) thus avoiding the problem.

  7. Andy, the manifold you posted, is a Rochester fuel injection from a 62-65 Corvette. The plenum top has been removed, and a plate to adapt the two carbs installed, probably homemade. See the small plates at the bottom of the runners with the bolt through them? That's were the injectors would go. Dean [IMG]

The converted F.I. manifold is the original set up made by Bill Thomas and sent to Eldebrock for testing. It is very simular to the first ones made by Eldebrock. Thats me in the back.I still have mine. Ran it for years and yes I did raise the floor. I drilled drain holes in the runners to remove puddled gas before that.
