When did using rock salt for show displays start?

    Ok, I see your point.

But what I'm trying to understand is if you're competing in an indoor show, isn't it about the car? Or your "decorating" skills?

Different strokes for different folks, I guess? :)

I think Simard had some leftover in Sidebotham's Deuce from Bonne...

as it continued to eat the cowl.

Think whatever you want about it, but it is traditional.

I agree....salt is the enemy of anything that's metal. When I got home from Bonneville last year, the whole underneath of my Pick-up that didn't have oil on it,rusted!

So, it would be better to have crying baby dolls and fake drive-in food trays with plastic food? It gives a nice contrast to the car. Covers up ugly concrete and it's easy to remove. I think it shows good thinking.

It's all about presentation. Those guys who LIVE for awards, are all about presentation. Many of those cars never get driven, except in and out of shows. I prefer the cars that are driven AND well kept.

Some of the cars competing for the AMBR award have 5 figure displays! Don't even get that one! Remember the 32 that had the Roulette wheel display! HUGE money in that display!!!

A car sitting for two days above a layer of dry rock salt shouldn't do anything to a car. It's when you have moisture and exposure to bare metal that you're going to have problems with the salt.

I suppose if someone was impatient and drove over it on the way out I would be careful to make sure you didn't have any stray salt pebbles hanging on to the bottom of your car.

    Me too!

Ah, the goldchainers. Reminds me when I took my 61 to Bob's Big Boy cruise night a few weeks ago. There must've been at least 20 lawn chairs in a row with their little area coned off. They wouldn't let anybody near their cars. Oh well just give me beer and tools and let me be greasy.

  14. I went to an indoor show about 20 years ago, saw lots of **** people, some cars with all kinds of distracting **** around them, said "what's the point" and left. Teflon brake pads **** in my opinion!

Not necessarily gold chainers... At least, not at an indoor show. It's the guys who are competing for the big awards. The other guys just want their cars to look good with the rest of the cars being shown. The guys who go to cruise nights....that's a different story! Typically your older, retired,Gold Chainers, who think their cars are significant.
Nobody wants people climbing all over their car and there are those people who just don't get the whole "Old Car" thing.
There's a guy who goes to cruise nights here in SoCal with an 80's Camaro and puts,NO KIDDING,30-40 trophys around his car! All from the 80's and 90's,haha. The car is nothing special,by todays standards. The other guys just look at him and shake their heads.

They've been putting stuff around displayed vehicles for over sixty years to keep people out of their "little area". Were these guys from the 1952 Los Angeles Motorama "goldchainers", too?

I like to see mirrors under a car, if they have some trick **** done to the ch***is. Its not like you can climb under it and take a look.

At least with those chains in your pic you could walk up and have a closer look. The ones I talked about wouldn't let you get within 6 feet of their rides.

The above post reminded me of something. When I was in my teens and went to every show I could, ALL the cars were roped off. Last year, at the Auto Rama, I saw quite a few cars with nothing to separate them from the crowd. Now, most car guys know better and won't go leaning or sitting on someone else's car, but I did see a few civilians who thought nothing about leaning and lounging around a car, so a friend could take a pic. So, is it being "stuck up" to rope your car off at a show? Are guys choosing not to rope their cars off at shows for a reason?

I had to tell a parent to stop their kid from trying to stand on my lake pipes to climb inside my car. But it was an outdoor event, so all I could do was stand guard the rest of the day. Which I hate doing. Is there a roped off rule or something? Opinions?

I remember the white gravel they put on the flat roofs of cheap track homes in the late '50s.
Granted, the 'white rock' (or 'rocksalt') looked more 'in-place' at an indoor car show.

But I always thought it looked 'tacky'. Same with the angel hair, and Jay Ohrberg's displays. Just...tacky.

A dark car photographs better with light surroundings. Standing next to a car looking down to a light reflection shows you how good (or bad) the bodywork is.

Rock salt around a traditionally styled show car is cool. Gives a nice vibe that the owner was really going for an era and thought of everything.

I don't remember seeing pics earlier than the early 60's with salt displays. That's kind of when the whole "show car" thing took off anyway.

Sent using the NEW Droid HAMB app from atop my toilet.

I've always liked it. WAAAY better than angel hair. Dates back to at LEAST the late fifties, judging by car show photos I have seen.

Rock salt around a car for 72 hrs doesn't do **** to the ride. There is no water of moisture around and it takes longer than 72 hrs to rust a car with salt. Besides Its placed around the ride. No salt touches the car. Anyway it's safer to have salt around your ride than people. They open doors, sit on hoods, scratch paint with their rings, put high heels on the chrome bumpers, screw with everything they can get there little disrespecting hands on

I got to keep an eye on the crowd in the Dome this year. It was pretty cool. Had to jump a few guys ****,for climbing over the ropes. Nothing bad....
I used to park all the cars that drive in on saturday and park outside. Somebody else did that this year. Except when they BOTH overslept sat morning!

Funny thing.... I yelled at one guy who hopped over the ropes to look at the bikes. He turned around and looked at me and raised his hand,as if to say sorry. As he walked away,I noticed he was wearing a ****ols t-shirt!!! HOLY ****! I just went back to Pieros booth and sat down, haha
    YES! I was hiding....

Post a pic of your shoebox swimming in salt. Looked mighty fine.
