i seem to find stuff no one else wants,54 savoy,74 chevy truck but these vehicles speak to me,i'm thinking about one or the other 24/7,there is a passion there,if it's not an obssesion i'd get something else, life is too short ...
One other thing that a couple of y'all have touched on: Over time, tastes can change. I'm not as fond of '56 F100s anymore as I was at 20. I prefer the '57-'66 bodystyles better now. I drove a '64 F250 for several years before it was just about to fall off the frame from the rust, & owned a '58 F100 project that got sold off before the '56 came along (young & stupid there, I will admit).
I think (at least for me) that you really really have to be turned on to a final specific image of the vehicle. Anything else should be left alone. I see things a lot that would be nice, but that doesn't cut it. Unless you're possessed with the image, don't do it.
Have you ever built a car....? Is it something you really want to do are would you be better off just buying a good driver and having fun with it..? Building a project can sometimes take a couple of years.... and sometimes you really have to make yourself work on it..
i learned years ago the stuff i drug home for little or nothing was gonna sit until sombody else traded me out of it. no shame in driving a vehicle that was built by somebody else. i can tell now it's gonna be a long winter!
Very, very true! How many times have we all seen it? Someone winds up with a car through it either being a good deal, or inheriting it from a relative or whatever, then orders a bunch of parts, then just loses interest. There's a guy on another forum I visit right now who's contemplating swapping a 460 Ford into a '67 El Camino just to piss of the GM guys. He has no money, but does have the Elky and the 460 and thinks it'll drop right in for free. You NEED to love what you're working on from day one. If it doesn't turn you on from day one, it sure as hell won't after you're broke, tired and burned out, now will it? It's just a car, sell it and use the money to buy a driver that you like, because the clock isn't stopping and you've only got so many years to waste wishing.
i have a '63 chevy carryall "burb" that i've owned for over 25 years now... drove it all over west coast never a problem.. now it needs a complete re-do.. been sitting now for 5 years.. ALMOST sold it.. even listed it for $2500.00 and had some bites..MY FAMiLY WON"T let me sell it !!! I love my family !!!! BUT that car is a big part of my family ,, and i have " dumped off "a few cars that i didn't care about.... dump it and get something that will make you want to walk outside just to look at... my chevy took a back seat to my new "first love",, a '48 dodge 4 door chop top,, dual frenched headlites,, it's just a project,, but when i first saw her,, i grabbed my wife and said 'LOOK"...... my wifes reaction was,,, it HAS to be candy eggplant with at least 3 color ghost flames,, air conditioned,, no stupid looking rims...... I replied so i can get it ???? truck went on back burner.....now i have 2 projects ...just sitting and waiting...
Every time I think I am tired of my MERC, I walk by it and think, DAMN that's a pretty car. I think I will keep it.
Part of the issue that hasn't really been touched is not having a budget, even a small one set and dedicated to your project. When people think they never have anything extra to spend on fun stuff, the focus on "fun" dwindles. I'd bet that happens in other places of life, as well. Think about what you really like and make a choice with that consideration. A positive here is that you haven't dumped a ton of money into it. That really does allow you to sell it off without (or at least less) regret. Also, you're not about to lose on this.
46, Those trucks are a labor.(Ask me how I know?) I fell in with a different group of mindsets and my project moved ahead light years. Either you love what you've got or find another dance partner? Best of luck with your decision.
