I think if it's on your car it should be working, so no blocked of carbs, gutless blowers and no mock up nonfunctional nitrous systems!! Why put some thing on a car if it does not serve a purpose? Just to look the part? I don't dig on the olds valve covers on a chevy either, if you want an olds, than for gods sake get one!!!! Buick drums with discs inside, how sad! If you want disc brakes run them don't hide them, I have discs on my model "A" ford and I don't hide, I figure it's my car and if you don't like the way I run it your lucky 'couse you don't got to drive it!!

Corvette valve covers are okay on any small block, because we put them on back in the day -- they're not a thing today's wannabes are doing 50 years later, they're what WE did back then when WE were wannabes. Ditto the dummy Appleton spots. They were put on every lead sled around back then, and they were publicly acknowledged as DUMMY spots. The thought was that they made a chopped Mercury look better. If they p***ed muster back in the 1950s, why shouldn't they p*** today?

The thing is, in just about any case, when it comes to putting non functional parts on your car that look cool, the only people you will fool won't know any better and won't care, and people who do know enough to care (fellow hambers and gearheads) won't be fooled by the nonfunctional part anyway. Then you look like the proverbial posure. (in my best french accent)

Exactly! If you open an old Almquist catalog from the early 50's, fake stuff was the hot seller! I'm a pinstriper and nothing is funnier to me than DOLL-UP STRIPES! But, that is traditional, so all that fake stuff, even some of the things guys have come up with since then is acceptable, as long as they are DRIVING THEIR CARS! Phony doo-dads can be annoying, but nothing is worse to me than guys who have awesome cars and don't ever drive them, guys who build race cars and never race them, or guys who are building a car that they never work on and is never finished. Those are HOT ROD fakes and much worse than any 6 carb Weiand Drag Star only running 4 carbs!
(wow, I type a lot faster when I'm drinking...)

Well, not to stir up controversy, but in general I consider traditional hotrods fake. I mean usually the goal is to make them 'look' like they were built 50 years ago. That is not true, thus fake. Now, I don't have a problem with fake. I even once built a kit GT40 (fake).

All of this does bring me to one of my long standing quandries that I can try and explain with this question.........Why is it that a guy who started with a Model A in 1960 and built it using all modern 1960 speed equipment is cool, but a guy who starts with a Model A in 2006 and builds it with all 2006 speed equipment doesn’t “get it”? Wouldn't it be "less fake" to use modern speed equipment to build a hotrod?

As far as fake, fake rust REALLY bugs me. Causing your car to rust to give it the "old look" REALLY bugs me too.

there are plenty of REAL 4 door g***ers out there, me and my dad know a guy who bought a '57 chevy 4 door in the 60's stuck a straight axle under it, has a peppy hopped up 283, drove it to the strip, AND whooped alot of 2 doors on the track. and the car is still driving around today with that same 283, still running tough.

AND?? Are you a Hamb cop?

Fake is fine when it makes the builder happy. I personally wouldn't run fake induction of any type, but would put 331 Caddy covers on a SBC at least until I got a real 331 Cad. I'm gonna run a C4 auto with three pedals in the cab to get my RPU on the road and then I will switch to a Stick so it is a REAL Hot rod. :D

Whatever ya gotta do to put it on the road.
