It aint over as long as you're still on the Green side. You sound a little
Bummed. How about building a Bike for a change and ride it to a few
AA meetings. I'm not trying to be a smart ***, just help.

Well, for me, It could never be over. Mostly because I'm a material ***** and I'm never satisfied with what I got. Seems I see something I just absolutely cannot live without, and save like hell or trade something off for it. Then, once I have it in my possesion, It's like, ok, I got it, Now I don't give a ****. I guess it must be the "thrill of the chase" I'm looking for. My Wife say's I'll always be unsatisfied when it comes to toys. Am I F_cked up? Or is it really OVER? Now I'm gunna go Drink Beer too and think about that. B

I don't know what kind of car you're crying over, but one thing is certain, you need to bang it's sister.

There's a Bhuddist adage that says until you reach enlightenment you tote water,....and then once you've reached enlightenment,...you tote water.

  6. Don't let the glitter cars get you down... In comparison My Roadster
is a piece of **** compared to 3WLarrys car!!!

But it'll beat the **** out of 99% of these glitter cars as far as performance and social coolness for one twentieth the cost...!

Besides... they end up selling them because they're afraid of driving and getting "dirty"!

****em Hack...!!!! Nothing more exciting than seeing a man chasing down a dream...!

Start looking for that dream... and if you don't have one... find one that somebody else has and help them get theirs until you can find yours.

Put down that ****ing beer and FIND that one project that you would "DO ANYTHING" for...!

Seriously drinking beer is the stupidest way of working out a problem especially if you're consistently putting down 20 of them...!!!

As you find yourself becoming emmersed in the project you'll find ways to either fund it or build it within your means and abilities!

I'm speaking from experience... P.M. me brother...

Not to play the Devil here ... but I get it :)

Nothing, and I do mean NOTHING ... is as much fun as it was 20, 30, or even 40 years ago. I enjoy getting my old roadster out ... on a summer evening. I still enjoy riding the Harley every so often. But going to the shows ... is no where near as much fun as they used to be. My 32 3W ... while I like it ... :) has never set me on fire like building and chasing parts for the 32 roadster did. Not the same p***ion for getting it going.

As a retired guy ... I have no real structure in my life. No schedule ... of required things to do or get finished. Do NOT have to be anywhere on time or accomplish a set number of tasks ... in a certain period of time. I just wander around ... aimlessly ... and be a BUM. The real bad thing about being retired is that you " never get a day off " ;)

Is it ignorance or apathy ??
I do not know nor do I care ...

I've known MANY guys who say "I used to have this______! Should have kept it...". Can't ever understand that.
I vowed that if I ever got my Merc, that I would NEVER sell it. I don't want to be one of those guys! EVER!!!
I would say find another project that moves you. Car,boat,whatever...There's many guys out there that just love the building part of our hobby. Nothing wrong with that. Then there's those guys who just do it for the money! I hate that...always will!

Holy **** - talk about opening Pandora's Thread!! I never knew there'd be so many philospohical and/or depressed people on here!!

Good god man - as the one post said: If you're Lucky Enough to be working on cars (have a hobby), you're Lucky Enough!!

Every time I get a different project vehicle it becomes a new p***ion for me. I learn all new stuff, I research it every night, buy books on it, I think about the parts and tools I'll need, dream of ways to finish it....Example: I never was truck guy. Didn't think trucks where cool. Now I just came into a '46 Merc F1 and have learned so much, now I think it's the coolest!! How did I not know about FlatHeads? The oil-air filter, the psuedo oil filter, the wacky 6Volt system...sourcing new parts, new web sites...I love it!!!!

Its never over, even when you get rid of the one auto you think you'd never do better then, im only 19, but i know this already.
when i had my 49' F-1, i was so happy i never thought i would have any other object that would be as fun. When it came to the point the floor was rotting on the p***enger side so bad my friends were scared to ride in it, the cab was rotting in the cornners, and the 454 would burn oil from the time it overheated when the radiator blew, i just lost hope, i dont have a welder, i dont have a garrage i can work in, my dads cars in it all the time and on top of that its barely big enough to get the car in let alone my behemoth. so i offed it, same day i drove it on a trailor across the state i picked up my 58' Del Ray on the way back, now even with it being in the condition it is, good none the less but just a ****load of little things, but in all honestly, im more happy then i was, i miss my beast of a pick up, but the 58' is just so much...cooler, its lines and its look, plus the del ray has a better engine then a high mileage 454 from a big old dump truck, its a Police Interceptor 350, better on gas, better on my drivers record. but to put is simply, its never over, SOMETHING better will come, if you look or create it.

So let me get this straight, your (1) and only dream project has now come and gone and it was perfect and there is no way you could be inspired to even try it again and somehow it might come out better the second time? What car was this? It was so good there is no way you could top it? Get another one and make it better next time. It couldn't have been that perfect that first time. Can we see a photo of the now gone perfect car? Maybe it was perfect and no way to be topped, I don't know, but I would like to see it.

Regardless, if you're just not into it any more, it's probably over, plain and simple - at least for the time being. Do something else you are interested into for a while and see what happens. Maybe you'll get re-inspired by a completely off topic thing and then want to get back into it more than ever. Don't sell off all your tools, etc. right away in case that might happen. If 5-10 years goes by and you haven't gotten back into it, then sell that stuff off or give it away to friends, etc. and never look back. You don't have to be into something forever. Unless you are into it, cars are just dumb piles of demanding expensive ****. You got to have the proper perspective to get enjoyment out of it and if you don't have it, it is nothing but headaches and projects you don't want to do. So, don't do it and do something else more fun. Travel around, see the world, but please don't pick up golf. We have already got more than enough golfers in this world. Play ping pong or something.

Ha Ha...some of the responses here are as surprising as they are funny, and some responses are right about what I expected from the given authors, but still...I do value the HAMB's collective opinion, which is why I put the question out there in the first place.

That said, let me just see if I can clarify a few points:

    1. Who said anything about being "down" or depressed? I'm not crying over the One car I no longer I have, it just sunk in that it would be silly to try and chase after another one, or some sort of "second choice" replacement thing...now THAT might be a recipie for depression, but I'm actually in a very GOOD place right now!

    2. I did build the bike I ride...it was just a $5 flea market pile of parts when I got it...but ****, a monkey could build a decent bike without half trying...there's no challenge in that, but they ARE satisfying to ride!

    3. I wasn't lusting after High End cars and the people who owned them...when I mentioned Top Shelf cars or completed Dreams, what I was saying is that I've seen folks on here stoked to the gills over some fairly odd and ****tered things, from high-zoot rods to home-built jalopies that were exactly what the builder/owner longed for. My quip was...what could you do after that?

    4. I haven't "lost anything" as far as being able to enjoy myself or whatever...I still get the biggest thrills from the simplest little things, just like always. Heck, the coolest thing that happened at the Gratiot Cruise was that I bought a bottled water from a stand some little gal in a Brownie uniform set up with her family as a fund raiser. It was early in the day and I was their first customer. Everytime I'd p*** by after that...even hours later, her dad would smile and say "Here's our first customer of the day!" I'd stop and talk with them a minute or two and then be on my way. Hell, even sitting with a small group of folks outside of Buscemi's eating a pizza roll on such a beautiful day...watching the cars cruise by was a genuine pleasure! Maybe it just occured to me that chasing after some automotive dream with tunnel vision blinders on was kinda dumb...when there's so many cool little things to experience every day?!

    5. Ha Ha...p***ed out? Naw, I went to play video games for a while, watched some TV and went to bed outta boredom! I knew I'd find some interesting comments when I came back this morning, though!

I was just shocked to discover that when it came to thinking about what kind of "project" to chase after NEXT...I arrived at the conclusion that I've already had the best example of the car I really wanted for years and years, and just moving on down the "list" to whatever might be number TWO seemed...I dunno...DUMB???

A short while ago, now that I have my own garage and what-not to work with, I dragged home some ****y project car, thinking that just having something to mess with would "fill the void" while I tried to figure out what I was really searching for...but that got old in a hurry, too. It's like that great line from some movie somewhere goes (in reference to a girl, though)..."You have to want somebody, not just want somebody!"...that holds true for cars as well! I walked out to the garage one day...looked at the wreck I'd put in there, then said "This is pointless", and just s****ped it. Ha Ha...now I use my garage as a place to park my daily driver when it rains...and to keep my bike in, of course! I get a bigger thrill out of mowing my lawn than I did out of working on half the cars I owned that just weren't "it", ya know???

Ha Ha...I guess that means I'm both old and young! I've reached the point where I'd rather paint the porch and cut the gr*** than mess with some less-than-number-one car...just like some old man...yet I also love every second I spend riding my "kiddie bike" and nailing the curb jumps and ****...just like long ago, before I fell into the "car world"!!

It's the best of Both Worlds?!

Damn, I don't know...but in the end, I guess it's weird to stop and realize that there's no point in chasing after something you've spent decades hunting down when there's a great big beautiful WORLD right under your feet to get a true kick out of every single ****ing DAY...but that's how it IS!!!

I guess THAT'S when you know it's truly over, eh??? ;):)

But you decided to get rid of the ultimate, took-years-to-find, project because you didn't have enough space to keep it? Seems like there must have been something else going on. Maybe it was the hunt that was interesting for you and then when you had it, it wasn't that interesting anymore. I think we need to get Dr. Phil to chime in here for an ****ysis. Besides ketchup, you might need some more sleep too. :)

Hack. If you don't get the feel for it, then don't do it. If you had 'IT' and don't then move on.

You've shared a ton of knowledge on here about engines, why don't you prove it? Don't build a car, build Design Of Experiments rod. Throw something together and then go for the powerplants you described in detail those eons ago. Take a '58 whatchamahoochie and make it generic in trans members etc and stuff in a 305, a BOP, a whatever and show that you were right. A pickup would work. Then drive it for a few and use it to get the next drive train.

Or don't. Go out in the sun (we get 80 days of it here in Michigan) and enjoy. We'll be here when you get back.

If you want an example. Look at Big Olds. He started as a mag car in a mag that expired. Then went to Denise. She got help from quite a few on here to spruce him up. She drove the piss out of him. She polished him up. She actually put a top and interior in him. He may have started belonging in the ba*****t at Autorama but this year was a trophy winner upstairs. He's DONE. See the posts "Done in the Sun Tour: 2008." Now she's driving him hither and yon. What does she do? Save her money so she can keep driving and blowing it all on gas? Nope, she does that AND she buys ANOTHER ONE just like him. She'll do Rusty Olds different or the same. It may take another 8 years or maybe only 8 months. Point is, she's got a car that is the ONE to many and her next effort is to get ANOTHER ONE.

If your's rolled out full of parts, was it a runner? If not, then you haven't had the one. You had the shell of the one. You didn't bond by driving across the country like you have in that mean green machine your driving today. Look at Brad54. He drove across the desert in a similar car to get it home. He's bonded.

Jusjunk builds 'the one' all the time and then puts it up for sale to build the 'next one.' Sephgato has the 'one' every other week and swaps it for another 'one.'

Just do what you enjoy. Like someone said, though, pay it forward, teach a younger guy how to find and build his 'one.' Be a sensai!
