I agree, patina is an overused word let alone an overused look. that rod is beautiful and leaving it that way let alone striping it smacks of laziness.....just my opinion.

I like it just the way it is now;)....it draws a person 'deeper' into the visual aspects of the car----it's nice to have a bit of mystery to a car when done tastefully....very cool car!!!:D

I agree that it has a very tasteful look and the attention to detail and well thought out plan all came together beautifully. Great job!!

  6. I get the "when are you gonna paint it?" at least 3X a week and I'm not driving the car yet. If I shook down everyone who asked that for $10, I'd have it painted sooner than later.

  7. To start with I am with Danny ( @HOTRODPRIMER ) I like the car real well.

That said, if you look inside at the sound deadener in the doors and the smooth paint on the dash and sills, "when ya gonna paint it?", becomes a logical question.

By the way I like the restraint on the stripes, looks like a prom date instead of some ol hyde you found on the stroll.

I keep going back and looking at this car, it just draws you in. It doesn't have rain gutters does it? That may be one of the reasons it just looks so right. Bob

  10. Real patina is like the callouses on your hands - earned through honest work

I can't begin to count how many times I get that stupid paint question for my COE. I finally figured out the best answer is to tell them I am having too much fun driving it as-is to stop and paint it.

Well that's how I see it...I actually bought black paint for this car, and still have it, but when I got the old paint stripped off I thought it looked cool and kinda told a story. If you see it up close, like at the right front fender, it has obviously been in a fender bender, but whoever in the past pounded the fender back out did such a great job, but you can still see hundreds of hammer dings that over time has smoothed out and are almost imperceptible today... There are subtle little scars here and there that kinda makes you wonder "when and how", but is remarkably straight and rust free....anyway, I love this car, thanks for the input everyone.

I can see why you want is as is, but..... when I looked at it, my first thought was how little work it would take to put that car on a whole 'nuther level.

As for the people who ask you that, me and the folks who have responded here included, just ask 'em to cut the check.

Your model A looks great with a bit of real weather on it. Plus, if it was super shiny, you might not drive it as much , or as hard (?) .

I get asked all the time if I'm going to paint my Shoebox or leave it as is. My answer is usually "YES, I'm certainly going to paint it - it's a custom in progress , not some damn rat rod !" . If they ask when it will happen , I'll usually tell them "once I'm done customizing it" . To be honest, most times people will just give positive feedback , and I'm cool with that. I wish I had the time and money to just finish it up right away , but I don't , lol !

  17. your car is good like it is. I get that questionwith my 55 chevy black primer 2 dr wagon. It has that hideious pink color they call coral. so I spray bombed it. And its a drag car. I don't plan to paint it. If the rest of the people in the world was blind would you care what color your car was?

I guess I can kind of understand not doing something. I cannot understand the pinstripe addition. Seems in conflict to me. I cannot appreciate the patina craze.
    Finish it. Ron

[IMG]how bout mostly original paint? The plan was always to run an extended shakedown, then blow it all apart and paint it shiny black. After a couple years I realized that wasn't gonna happen. They're only original once! If someone wants to buy it and polish and paint it,I guess that will be her next stage in life. But for now it's staying just like this.

  21. I hear the same question on a regular basis and my standard answer is when I can get someone to pay for it.:D

When I bought this car many years ago it was my intent to have a shiny finish with a nice interior, that never happened and to be honest I like the old paint.

I like driving a beater,I don't worry about the weather or where I park,at this stage of life I enjoy driving a lot more than polishing. HRP

Looks good. Tell people when they ask when are you going to paint it, that you are donations for paint, would they like to donate? LOL

  23. I was driving a Kenworth truck all the chrome & bells and whistles. And I hated it . I didn't like cleaning & polishing it. And another driver was in a newer Frieghtliner. plain jane painted white truck with black painted wheels. black bumpers . no chrome anyplace. And he wanted the KW. and I gladly traded. 3 months later he wanted to trade back. No luck

  25. Let me throw something out here, I like old paint, I do not like rust, rust is just another way of mother earth showing us that she is taking back what we took from her in the first place.

There is actually a very fine but distinct line that separates patina from decay. Let me throw out a couple of examples here.

Danny's Deuce has patina, or old weather from use paint.

My A on the other hand does not have patina it has decay, and that requires one of two things either it needs a resurrection or a tomb stone inscribed RIP, Rust In Peace.

    pass side.jpg

So if you park your heap and when you come back and find a little tombstone drawn on it like this

It is probably time to think about either giving it back to mother earth or a resurrection.

Maybe if you paint it they will.

  26. That car is a good example of actual patina. It's the car's original paint, showing its age from natural processes. No one has messed with it, trying to make it look better (or worse). Once you strip some of it off, or rub through the topcoat to expose the primer beneath, or spray some primer blotches here and there for effect, it's not patina, it's fake.

Actual patina looks good to most people, and it's honest. Because it looks good, some folks try to emulate the look without having it occur naturally. It's not the same, it's an imitation. And I've never seen one of those fake patina jobs which I think looks good. To my eyes, there is no comparison.

Edit: Benno's post was not up when I was typing mine. My post isn't a response to his, and I don't disagree with anything he said. I agree with the points he made. Real patina is very special, as are the well-preserved cars which have it. Once they start down the road to decay, you've lost any opportunity to display nice patina.
