Period or era correct parts and cars from stem to stern is so appealing. Most people have a great car but dont carry the theme over the entire build.

All of the categories, exception being when I attend a big show such as Back to the 50's. I checked Rods/Kustoms and Survivors, my taste has changed somewhat with time but Hot Rods/Kustoms from childhood to present day always my favorites.

I voted for Rods and Other. My choice of Other is for how cohesive the design is, does the car follow a theme or is it a hodgepodge of ideas?

That pretty well sums it up for me.
What usually catches my eye is a compete package ride that everything works together on and that doesn't have added crap for effect or because that is what the cool guys have this week.
I pay a lot more attention to the ones where everything works together and has one continuing theme. Custom with appropriate white walls for the time frame the build represents and caps rather than mag wheels of any kind.
Hot rods where everything works a one package and nothing overshadows the rest of the car.

If it isn't a Hamb friendly hot rod or custom it has to be damned nice or seriously special or on my list of cool cars to get a lot of attention from me. Your so so late 60's Chevy pickup might get a couple of quick photos while the well put together but not Hamb friendly AD Chevy Pickup next to it may get shots from every angle and then some and I might stop and ask several questions to boot.
One of my best friends used the term "Radical" a lot when he was describing cars. I always knew that when he was saying that he saw this "radical" car that I wasn't going to like it at all. Chopped Caddy coupe with a tunnel ram sticking though the hood and a big scoop sticking up a foot above the roof of the car was his idea of radical or something on that line. he more like a cartoon car it looked the better he liked it.

Anything from the 50s vibe or older I tend to gravitate to. Oddities as well. There was a totally restored willys army jeep at the last thing I went to and I thought was really neat. Also a really well done coe I thought was awesome. Coe's always impress me, I'd like one of those some day. There was also a corvair wagon that was mint and all original. Had never seen one of those.

Quality workmanship and especially I like to check out other 38's for what they have done. Always have an open eye for anything that is different. Overall, I love all Rods.

....to look at cars like this (I am not a big fan of the bare metal look) because to quote Indian Larry "I want to see the mechanicalness"

Yes, the body and paint on the frist cars are beautiful but all the mechanicals are hidden.
