I have had this '40 for a little while now and it came from a Hero in my life. It'll always be Ron's '40, I like it that way and it makes me ecstatic to have it to take care of. Having said that anyone who's ever driven a '40 'Vert knows they are pretty difficult to see out of. Add in a Carson Top and a healthy chop and you've got a blind spot bigger than Steevie Wonders. Needless to say using this car was a serious nerve fest at times. Freeways especially. I knew the Carson Top factory made these things to come off, just how difficult it was I had no idea. But finding out was a necessity if I was ever going to enjoy driving this car and have some visibility for simple things like lane changes, parking, backing up, etc........ Here's where the story gets a little funny, Ron loves Convertibles. I mean not like them, he LOVES them. But in all his years and every one he's owned, never once took off or put the top down once in place. See the dilemma? I was changing the game in the face of the set path on this. but it just had to be done. So I pulled up my Big Boy pants and set it free. The Top now hangs in a place of utter safety, and as long as I have this will never leave that place of safety. Convertibles need to be Topless, or top down period. But enough of the backstory. I know this upholstery guy, he's always friendly and we have pretty good mutual friends. I had asked him a bit ago to do the cover. But he's good at what he does and the list is long. So I had to be patient. Not my strong suit for certain. But after much patience and careful asking he absolutely nailed the cover! I turned the car over to him with the simple thoughts of make it right. Now that is no easy task on something this special to me. I know Greg's Great at it, but still interpretation often leads to sparkly paint and spider webs. I never asked how, what, or how long. Just trusted and figured if I really was disappointed I'd cross that when/if the time came. But I couldn't be happier! Greg simply said "I let the Car tell me what it wanted" In Tune? Shit he's Conductor of the Philharmonic in my book! I'm going to wear the tires out and go buy more, she's a super joy to drive now! Thanks Greg!
Great looking convert there! I'm having the same dilemma at the moment. Laboranti Custom Upholstery just did my seat and Jerry is thinking a Tonneau cover would not only look good but be practical as well. I've been pondering a Carson style top but after your thread I tend to agree with Jerry. Sweet ride there. Enjoy it!
Honestly it looks better without the top. I can't unsee the imaginary scenario that a giant dropped their pancake and it draped over the car.
I don't know what you are building. But that definitely looks like it is going to be a blast! and yes Tonneau, no top.
Hahahahahaha. I never thought of that, but it does resemble that in many ways. Besides, tops are for Coupes......
