10,000 RPM tachs are just cool, Don!

...Thanks, Steve. Funny story about how I got that tach. I bought the '40 from a good friend in January of 1990. The tach was in it when I bought it, in fact he had borrowed it from another mutual friend. I say borrowed because it was supposed to be returned if the car was ever to be sold. Needless to say, 32 years later I still have it. I'm thinking that the original owner has forgotten about it by now, but it did create a bit of tension between the two friends for a while.:D;)

Mounted mine under the dash on one of those cheap chrome panels. Little 2" one I bought years ago. It's more auxillary than "watch the RPM to shift", but it's very useful when doing a tune-up.

Depends on how badly you want to see it when you're hammering the loud pedal and rowing the four speed.

  12. Where did you get the cool tach mount that attaches to the steering column?

I used to race my Olds and I installed a shift tube with a digital tach and shift lights. Not much to look at. And yes, factory tach in the dash that is impossible to read while racing.

Had an old sun tach, gutted it, epoxied a chunk of PVC in it

Simple press fit over the tube

No one pays attention to it now.

...I bought that almost 20 yrs. ago at the NSRA Nats East in York, Pa. I believe it was a Borgeson piece, but my memory isn't that good anymore.

When I raced, I used a modified Torqueflite shifted by the pushbuttons. I mounted my Sun Tach right above them. The Sun stopped working because I can no longer get the batteries. A number of years ago, my wife bought me a repro. Moon tach and I put it in the same spot even though I have a 4-speed now. 57 Tach and Gauges.jpg

The Fairlane has a chrome Autometer on top of the dash, it looks correct for the car. My Plymouth has a padded dash so I made a mount that is under the dash and comes out from underneath so the large tack is forward of the dash by a few inches, a leftover from racing days.
