Can I see some photos of where some of you guys are putting your radios in the older pre 1935 cars/trucks?

Its a little tough to see in the pics but on my '32 chevy I made a small box on the back shelf behind the p***enger seat. Then I made a panel to cover the full deck out of 1x4" wood slats. It has old looking hinges and lock to keep it closed. Im going to run the radio with an ipod so really wont need to open it while driving. Sorry, I dont have any pics of what it looks like complete.

Also I built a small sub box to fit in an old milk crate. Then cover the top with some screen and bolt to the back deck. Im not looking for a crazy sound system but it will at least add a little to it.

Everything will be hidden in the car so nobody knows it has a radio unless its playing

Don,are you talking about putting a radio in the coupe or your truck.

I don't have one in my sedan or truck but if I do it will probably be one of the hidden radios that work with a remote control.

That's what I had in the roadster but to be honest,,I rarely used it. JRP

  4. If your car or truck has a seat base that is a good place to out the radio. If you wanted to be real stealth about it you could set it back and put a little door over it.

I was considering both vehicles. There just isn't anywhere I like to put it in the truck because I don't want it in the dash. Maybe a remote control unit there similar to Jims idea, perhaps under the seat.
The coupe has the package shelf in behind the seat but thats hard to get to if you are driving.
I was thinking of maybe a swing down panel under the dash that you can tuck up under the dash when not in use maybe..just searching for ideas.

I have mine in an overhead console that is covered in the same material as the interior. It blends in well. Mine is a 31 sedan and is not chopped.

I my old Model A pickup back in the 70's I had the radio mounted in the panel under the seat,,this was before the remote had held devises like today,,just knobs,,I just set it on the station I liked and listened to one.

It was impossible to find a station while driving.

I remember the radio was in the package shelf in the coupe,,I tried to find a station driving it down the road,,ended up turning it off,,,a drop down sounds good. HRP

I built a holder above the windshield for the stereo to ride in, and it also serves as the mounting point for the rear view mirror.

  11. In the garbage!

    Seriously!

There are only 2 sounds I want to hear when I'm driving one of my rides, the engine and the Flowmasters or drag pipes.

The only time I want to hear tunes when I'm driving is when I'm driving my diesel Super Duty (can't stand that damn rattling noise) or my Magnum wagon.

This is in a '32 3 window. I didn't hide it since I used it all time. Speakers were in the kick panels.

Saw a remote unit installed in the sun visor. The main unit was hidden in the trunk. Only visible with it pulled down.

I dont have a headunit in my 50. I use my mp3 player with a cord that plugs in to the rca jacks on an amp that is mounted under the seat. When I am riding the mp3 player is right next to me. When I get out the mp3 player goes with me and the cord gets tucked under the seat.

1935 Ford pickup I put mine in the seat riser---upside down! That way the volume is on the left, tuning on the right like God and Henry Ford intended. No I cant see the face of the radio, but I rarely need to. On/off volume is usually all I need

Some of the posters dont need radios in their weekend toys but 8 hour trips are better with a radio

  19. Most of the time you couldn't hear a radio or stereo I my old hoopties.

Last one I had a stereo in that could be heard if you really cranked it was an OT pickup. I pulled the hot wire one day when I was on my way to a photo shoot. The station I was listening to had a led zepplin nonstop for an hour thing and I discovered myself driving way above the speed limit about 20 miles past where I was supposed to be.

Note to self never ever rock out in a hot rod.

I want a radio in some of my cars some of the time. I also didnt want to buy a stereo for each car and speakers. I got four cars i drive. That really adds up. So I built a plywood box and put the speakers in it and the radio with a handle on top. It works good and i can put it in any car or leave it home. I can hook it up in several different ways. It also has sirius and only one service fee. Only thing its missing is a cup holder. I also built it like a wedge so it can go under the p***engers legs.

Did a 60's style channelled roadster and put it right there in the dash where I can reach it

You could hide head unit behind dash or under seat and use steering wheel controls to operate

You can hide under the parcel tray as you were saying. The modern units with remote of course.
In my O/T daily i put the head unit under the rear seat and i only have to point the remote back to switch track. no biggie.
The over head idea is neat, but its still visible, and modern units on anything not modern are a total eyesore!

In my 51 ply, I built a panel that goes mounts behind the dash where the factory radio went. Then I gutted the factory on so all I have is a faceplate, now I just have to mount it on some hinges with a actuator to move it up and down. And with it on I can even control it with the remote through the speaker grill. Later down the road I am going to take the rca's and hook them up to a volume control and mount it in the factory radio .
Rear deck speaker are under the fabric so you can't see them.
Two Tc Sounds 8's are in a fibergl*** box behind the spare tire, so you can't really see the them went the trunks open. They go in a really small .10 sealed box and handle 500w each, they get it on for 8's
And when I do the door panels, the speakers in the doors will get cover buy the cloth to, so they won't be visable at all.

    I can post pics later.

Radio/stereo, iPods, Sirius, remote controls... Really? Doesn't sound very traditional to me! Definitely would not fit in with a HAMB Period Correct build! But what would I know? I'm presently building a Hotrod Fibergl*** Vicky with Demon 98 Carbs, air conditioning, stereo and leather interior.
