I use to buy br*** wool (like steel wool) at boat shops to restore old chrome, can't find it anymore locally, any tips ? Thanks, Scott
West Marine and most marine stores carry it because you can't use regular steel wool on a boat (Little rust flakes get all over the boat if you do). Don
Any good hardware store can get it in a day or two. I have used bronze wool with equally good success, it's usually easier to get! KK
Copper scrubby pads 3 for a $1 buck at the Dollar Store. I use them with Pledge to remove rust, what do you do?
Neighbor of mine years ago stripped the paint off his Lyman, lap sided wooden boat. DA sanded it, then hand sanded it. For the final hit, his son and he went over the hull and decking with "steel" wool. After hours of painting and varnishing the boat, they launched it back into Cape Cod bay where we all lived. If you look up the definition of PATINA you will see a picture of The Lamont's Lyman boat. That thing turned from white to yellow then to a lovely shade of baby poop brown in under 7 days. It spent the next two months up on saw horse with tarps spread all over the front yard getting that nasty rust knocked off it. Made me a believer in BRONZE wool, available at most marine supply stores.
Having been in the retail/wholesale paint business my whole adult life I sold both bronze and steel wool,I have since retired from the business but you can still find bronze wool at the big box stores like Home Depot & Lowes. HRP
if the stores don't have it order it from them on there online sites and have it shipped to the house ,or shipped to the store free ( home depot ) I have to do that with several products that the stores in my area do not sell alot of but I need and this is how I get it . might have to wait 2-10 days but beats the shipping costs .
