I have a big open hole and would like to fill it with original stuff. I am looking for the whole ****eree, wood, chicken wire, vinyl, outer weather stripping stuff, etc. Julainos has a kit, but it has a big goofy hard edged snap in trim thing on the outside, which looks like ****. Macs has the wood, but that is far as my Googleizer has taken me. Thanks, -Abone.
I think I still have the original 3 oak ribs that go across when I did my 35. They are OK and you are welcome to them for the price of shipping. I picked up a new set from, I think, Bob Drake when I ordered the rubber seal that holds the insert in the gutter. I found the chicken wire at the local farm supply. I had some extra cotton batting from a previous door panel job and I ordered the vinyl from a local upholstery shop. It was relatively inexpensive. It wasn't all the difficult to install, but make sure you have a friend handy. Start by pushing the rubber seal over the vinyl on the front channel, making sure it is pulled tight from side to side, with some excess sticking out past the seal, then work you way around with one person keeping the vinyl pulled tight and the other pushing in the rubber seal. The seal needs to meet in the middle of the back channel. After you have the seal completely in place, with the vinyl stretched tight you can take a razor blade and "CAREFULLY" cut the excess vinyl away from the lip of the seal.
Thanks, guys. Macs did have all the stuff to do it, just not in kit form. Wood, top kit and rubber seal dealy were all separate part numbers. Not difficult to find, but it outsmarted me the first time I looked for it. Thanks, -Abone.
If your going to drive this thing at todays highway speeds you might want to put a piece of plywood or metal insert in it.
Go to the boneyard and pick out a late model hood or trunk with the same contour. Cut it out to fit the opening and wrap it with the vinyl of your choice. Attach to hot rod and drive.
I have never tried it but I have been told that you can make a radio antenna by isolating the chicken wire from the body and running an antenna lead to it. Anyone had luck doing this? Charlie Stephens
This is all I have. I used 1/4" baltic birch screwed every 6 to 8 inches in the field. I then applied 3 coats of marine spar varnish to each side. when installed I used automotive gl*** setting uerthane over the screw holes and the edge of the metal to wood.
