Not only do I understand why and where Henry Ford came up with the names for his cars, but they sound cool too. the Fairlane ( Fair Lane was the name of Henry Ford and Clara Ford's estate in Dearborn, Michigan ) the Galaxie, the Vicky, the Falcon, ect, ect...
But where in the world did Chevy come up with their names? Corvette? Delray? Nova? I mean, they sound cool to us now, but where did they come from? Does anyone out there know???
    Hmmm......

I think some of these may lead back to Harley Earl. Not 100% sure.

I know that some of the names did not translate well to other languages, Nova for example in spanish means OLD, who wants to by and OLD car.
Rumer was they changed the name to Noventa which meant new. Course my source on that was 9th grade spanish class.

Are you sure that was a Spanish class? "No va" doesn't mean "old", it means "doesn't go". And "noventa" is "ninety", not "new".

Camaro was from a french dictionary meaning "comrad".... You don't see many Novas in Mexico.... To them, it means it don't go.... LOL :D

  6. Delray is the name of a town in Calif. Loosley translated from spanish it would mean "of the king" or "belongs to the King" although it would be spelt Delrey but pronounced the same.

Nova is a latin word that more or less means new beginning. Or in the case of a star it means the end I guess but when a star goes super nova it is a new beginning for something else.

Corvette I can't give to ya but I think someone can come up with an answer on that one.

more often than not it is a bunch of nerds in marketing that come up with the names for stuff.

    Camaro is latin-based for friend.

    Impala is easy enough.

Belaire or Bel Air should also be easy, exclusivity.

Biscayne is a bay in Florida, I think.

Caprice I always thought was a play on the word "capricious" (sp?) meaning dolled up, paraphrasing the definition. I'll let some others play...

Oh I forgot, 500 extra bonus points to the 1st one who can tell us what the original name for the Camaro was supposed to be.

I dont know if was the same back then, but if you've ever seen the documentary on the making of the Harley V-Rod, there is a scene in there where they are deciding on the name. They had literally 10's of thousands of names that they sifted through. If they found one they liked they'd research it for meanings, copyrights or registrations on it, etc. When you see how many names they go through, it's disappointing that the best they can come up with is "v-rod". I've always liked Panther better than Camaro, but at least it's not named after a horse

  18. "Corvette" is a small, fast naval boat, larger than a PT boat, but smaller than a destroyer escort.

There was a Corvette called the Mako Shark, but Corvette is NOT named after a shark.

Many Chevy names are simply place-names: Malibu, Biscayne, BelAir, Brookwood, Greenbriar, Monza, Cheyenne, Tahoe, Colorado, and so on.

Ford's issue wasn't so much the name of the car, it was all the other crap they added on ...instead of being able to say "L78 Camaro", a Mustang has a "Super Cobra Jet". Ok, so your car is a super snake horse plane?

"A corvette is a small, maneuverable, lightly armed warship"

I figure this was the origin of the Chevy Corvette. The ships date back to the mid 1800's (or maybe earlier, I don't really know)

I like that one. That's the 'case' I always bought my Corvettes in. A 'basket'.

I think the times were prohibitive for the other name, "Panther"...there was a group by that name that might have stigmatized sales at that time...
