I asked my mom to help me come up with names for my new website about cars... She came up with "The Jalopy Digest"... I didn't like the word "digest" and considered the website more of a journal...

So sometime around 1995, I changed the name of my website from "Ryan's Traditional Hot Rod Page" to "The Jalopy Journal".

  2. I dunno, with some of the crappy posts I've seen of late, I think "digest" may have been more accurate. (think about it boys, it'll come to ya)

I came here after reading something that I think Jim Rizzo (maybe it was Pat Ganahl) wrote about trad rods and he mentioned a thing called the Hokey Ass Message Board. I lurked for a while and now you can't shut me up. This place has changed my whole perspective of rodding for the better.

I found the Jalopy Journal and the HAMB through a classic Chevy forum. When they figured out I wasn't doing an all points resto and wanted something different, they sent me here.
Being on the HAMB has taught me an enormous amount and has introduced me to plenty of cool people and events.

I was hanging out mostly at Street Rod Stuff, with the likes of Denise, Alan Gingles (boyd who?), and Purple pickup.

A few of us were wishing there was a Site more to our taste, and one that didn't rag on Germ. Then Alan told me about the HAMB, which I think he called the Honkey Ass Message Board ..... anyway I came over and have never been anywhere else again.

I often think about the fact that back then we did no intros.... At least I never did. I just started joining in the BS. So .....

Hi my name is Terry, and I'm a hoodlum ....

I was 18 years old... And actually, my dream came true about 4 years later... I used all the knowledge from you folks to finish my '38 coupe.

I've got some screen shots from the early days somewhere (when TJJ was hosted on Geocities). I'll see if I can't dig some up...

I think I maybe got 5000 pageviews the first year... Now we average over 10 million per month.

I was a lurker on ebay motor board for many years and was starting to get sick of it . They only complained about getting ripped-off. Then i saw a post between arkies hot rod and I think 49 ratfink talking about this hamb site and how great it was. I did a little search, found it, lurked about a year and then joined because this site is what I was looking for. It's amazing how much talent and information is here. Never been back to that other board. Steve

  10. While surfing various hot rod sites,I tried the link from the exstensive list on Garage magazine.I've been hooked ever since.Unfortunetly i am midway on a project, that was more in the "streetrod" direction.I was finding this very dissatisfying as they(streetrodders)seem to be more about who can spend the most $$$ So now i have a very hitech chassis(tci ifs,stainlessA-arm,wilwood hubs & brakes),with a crate motor and 700r4.Hopefully a few HAMB members can give some"constructive"ideas to redirect this project in a traditional theme.

Searching for a way to make the impossible possible, which no one could, I found it here with pictures and it was all correct.
In return I try to post only what I know. There is a lot to read every day that's funny, or nonsense, or worse. It's a real place where real people roll up their sleeves and do things.

I was doing searches for information on suspension and steering up grades for my F100 ...I still think you all are way over my head but I might as well learn from the best.

It's too bad some of you don't do articles here on different subjects... like welding. I learned to run a bead with an arc welder but I'd have no idea today on what kind of welder to use....Does anyone even still use a buzz box welder?

  20. Graffiti32 told me about it when everybody was rippin'on some guy that found a hubcap.Checked it out & thought it was pretty cool.

I was doin' a web search on quarter elliptical springs. I really had no idea how much of my time would be sucked up by this F'n computer! Had I never seen the HAMB, I might be spending more time in the garage, but it wouldn't be nearly as rewarding. Thanks Ryan and Co.
