It's about time to put a CD player in my pickup. I want to hide it because it has to sit on the street. My truck isn't super rare or old (a '79 Chevy), but cutting a cherry dash isn't kool. I've thought of putting it in the glovebox, but I cruise alone about 90% of the time, so changing CDs or stations would be a pain. I was just wondering where some of you guys with older cars with beautiful dashes put your tunes to save the old school look of your dash. Suggestions and pictures if you have them are appreciated! Hide a CD changer behind your seat and operate it with a remote. It can be used in conjunction with a cheap AM/FM cassette stereo tuner (shaft style to fit your dash) that nobody would want to steal. All they'll see is some antique dash unit, but your CDs will be in a changer behind your seat!
In my '38, I used an Alpine amp with source plug-in cd-changer controls. So, all I had to do is plug in the AI-net Alpine CD changer and the CD-changer controller (small 1.5" by 4" box at the end of a nicely finished and wrapped bundle of wires)... Works great and I have nothing to hide as the cd changer controller just slips between the seat back and bottom...
That's a new one to me Ryan. I'm not sure if I understand. You have an Alpine amp that has provisions for a CD changer and a controller? Does this mean you don't have to have a deck mounted in your kar? Do you happen to know what model numbers your equipment is? I'd really like to look into this further. This is just what I need!
On my 35 Ford pickup, I put it in the storage area under the seat. It is invisible. It also means memorizing where the controls are or getting out of the truck to change stations. But no one has stolen it in 10 years and thru 4 states!
i have a custom auto sound system ....its called secret audio.....cd changer etc......you dont see anything .i even left my stock radio in the dash so it would look nice....www.custom-autosound.com check em out i have had mine about 2 years and really like it alot... oh yeah its all remote controlled too......
I took my Alpine face apart and usesd a 24 pin din cable for a pc and sat down and soidered ever pin. After that I gutted my rear view mirror. I used abs plastics and the trim ring. The unit has a changer. People look around all the time and can not find the radio. Who looks in the rear view. It's won me a few awards at shows. Nothing like beating out fresh paint, when mine was covered in DP-90. I also installed another one in Glassholes car same design just not in the rear view.
i think Ryan is not running a tuner, ie. CD only. but i don't know its been a while since i've been into this stuff, but ryan has the right idea, you can get tuners that have wired and wireless remotes, affordable too. hide it? one of my old systems. man that was a long time ago!
i put my AM/FM/CD player behind the truck seat. It has a remote so I don't need to screw with it.........
i wonder if you could use the din cable and mount the face plate in the back of the sunvisor? you flip down the visor and theres your radio.
I've did the visor install before. 2 things to watch out for, If you splice a cable use 24k wire, if you do not the resistance will build up, ( the face will not light up enough) and other functions will not work. Also make the cable short as possible. When I did the visor install the cable got worn after a year or two from fipping the visor. Hard mount if possible.
I don't have a stereo in anything I own. Well the S10 has one, but I put it in because I thought it had a clock in it. Found out after I hooked it up that it doesn't. Oh well. Dean
Two recomendations: Ryan has the right idea. But, if you want to change CDs while driving, you'll need something in the dash. Saw this online, or in one of the mags: Put the CD player behind a dash grill and stick the CDs between the dash grille bars. #2 XM Radio. Can't recommend it enough. Remember when cable TV first came out and it didn't have commercials? Remember when HBO was wall to wall movies with no fluf? XM is IT. You can put the antenna on the package tray and run a removable tuner that plugs into a small socket. I've had it since last November and have hardly ever tuned into the local broadcast since then.
Mine is cleverly hidden in a plain brown cardbord box under my dresser in the extra bedroom but don't tell anyone... Ixna on the ocation-la...know whatta mean? wink wink, nudge nudge...

If this link works it should take you to what ryan has... for the changer peice Alpine changer hope that helps Garth
onlelow48 that rocks! Very trick great idea. One of the things that I have been tempted to buy is the new Ipod. 10,000 songs and you can now get an FM transmitter for it for like 40 bones. Use your original deck and take the Ipod with you when you leave your vehicle. http://www.apple.com/ipod/ Justin
I like the secreat audio best for a fully hidden system that is fully funtional with the remote control.
I don't imagine you have a console in the truck, but in my '64 Olds, i have a '70 Cutlass console, and my CD player is hidden in the console glove box. Works fine mounted face up and is in easy reach.
Root, if you buy the Delphi unit, all the controls and the "key" are in a pod like a faceplate that you can move from car to car, and even to your home system. You have to have a cradle and antenna at each location though. I suppose that you could modify a cradle and antenna so the whole kit is transportable - sorta like a Garmin Street Pilot. Watch for sales on the Delphi unit. Through a company affilitaion program I've had the oppertunity to buy it for $100 with my choice of an automobile or in-home cradle.
I don't know part numbers.... I'll try to look tomorrow when I get home from work... I don't have a "deck" at all... Just an amp, an Alpine changer, and the small changer controller...
I've got 406CI of tunes mounted right in front of the firewall, I mounted the controller on the floor where my right foot rides, Speakers are 3" Flowmasters mounted beneath the floor. Didn't have to cut the dash at all and it works great!
I mounted mine in the glovebox. It was there for about a year and a half before it was stolen. Unfortunately, thieves usually search your entire car when they break in, so your "safe spot" isn't as safe as you think. Ed

It plays the same tune all of the time, but I never get tired hearing it.
I was thinking about an iPod as well. But I was thinking I'd run an amp and a line out into the amp. I've got a cd player that has an FM transmitter for my Bronco, and it sucks. I won't waste my time with that technology anymore. Personally, I'd not even bother, but my g/f NEEDS tunes. I'm happy just listening to the cars themselves. For that reason, I took the stereo, amps, boxes all out of my chevelle. I'd much rather listen to my new motor. She was less than thrilled.
