Boy am I glad this thread got started. I had a steel '40 Ford coupe when I became a HAMBer but two years ago, I sold the '40 and got a real good deal on a '34 Ford coupe from Gibbons. It's the Viper package and someone else built it. I like the idea of building my own but I'm too impatient. I have helped buddies build there rods (7 years in one case) but ,in all honesty,I'd rather drive one and make upgrades and changes when I can afford it.
Since I bought this fibreglas car,I've rarely talked about it on the HAMB because ,frankly, I didn't want to read all of the ball busting, and I felt I let this board down somehow,so,anyway, I'm out of the closet now!!! [IMG]

  3. Nuthin in the world wrong with a gl*** body. I see a lot od trad rods rollin' on box tubeing frames, some repop pieces etc.

Here's tradition build with what's at hand.

Sure you get braggin rights with steel all original, but you get smiles with what ever you can get on the road. Build it style it and drive it 'til the wheels drop off. Then build it again, or build another one.

If its any consolation I know a guy building a salter X/F altered roadster. He's using a gl*** '27 body. Not because its lighter but because he has access to a gl*** '27 roadster body. No deeper tradition than land speed raceing, my friend. Will he brake records, well that remains to be seen. But I'm really going to enjoy seeing the grin that comes from his first p*** on the salt.
It's all about haveing fun. Build your gl*** car and make sure that someone snaps a pic when you fire it for the first time, i'm really going to enjoy seeing your grin also.

  4. There's damn well nothing wrong w/ gl***! Provided it was lighter than steel, guys were using it like it was going out of style in the 60's.

If you've got the skills to build a hand-laid something or other like Roth did...more power to you.

If this car isn't "traditional" than I'll be tarred and feathered.

Maybe I am wrong here but I didn't think he was talking about 'gl*** rods. I thought he was talking about hand built 'gl*** "showcars" - (Roth style) made from scratch or starting out as the shell (of any car) and built into something far different (again like what Roth did to a T-Bucket when he built the Outlaw).

Building a 'gl*** rod (no political opinion on that here) is far less involved than "sculpting" your own car from scratch. You have to have everything that it takes to build a fibergl*** car PLUS you have to add on top of all that everything that is needed to make the body/panels from scratch. i.e. Bucks, molds, bracing, and whatever you plan on using to "sculpt" the parts that would be turned into bucks, molds and things of the like....

Ok, now that I have said that. It looks like this isn't your first car, it looks like you might have the tools to get you by and it sounds like you have the outside help you need.....

There comes a time in the hobby where you can't ride the fence. This is one of those times. You want to build a car that basically doesn't exist - so you either build it or you don't. In this case there is only one way to learn how to do it and that is to dive in and start it. All the suggestions in the world aren't going to get it done any faster. All you can do is get cracking. Education will help and reference material will tell you how to do parts of it, but it's the builder who has to collect the knowledge and follow the directions to put those parts together.

....and if all you were looking for was an opinion about if hand build 'gl*** cars were trad or not, sorry I became such a windbag..... [IMG]

....ohh and we won't know if it's trad until you build it. [IMG]

I think Street Beasts should have their names changed to plain old Beasts.
