I hear all about the Astro Vans 11 inch clutch disk for installing a T5 to a Flathead truck bell/hogshead and Dwight Bond adapter plate but after a billion searches I come to the conclusion that they only sell it in a full kit now. Speedway sells a 10.5 disk for 69 clams which I might do but thought I would ask the experts.
called NAPA but got shot down. I will try a couple of others in the morning. Common Ford part? Its a 1in 14 spline 11in disk. What ford should I look up? Couldn't find Astro Van on Clutch Masters web site.
I did say T5. The one in a 4.3 1985-1989 Astro Van. You use this disk with the stock flathead truck bell with stock flathead clutch basket and S10 T5 trans.
I have used 10.5 disks with 11 inch cover many times with no problems i found this out from Merv Scott who was with Schiefer Clutch years ago. We would do this with 4spd trans. The less rotating weight of the disk would make it shift cleaner at hi RPMs.
I just searched Napa, O'Reilly's, Auto Zone and Rock auto and evidently they now call a clutch disk by some other name that I haven't heard. I went back and put in an older vehicle 1988 Astro Van with the V6 4.3 should show the 11 inch clutch but the one through O'Reillys is the same price as the ones the guys showed from Summit. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...=Search_01344_1027921_3703&pt=01344&ppt=C0015
I can only find that particular size spline in a 11 inch disc. No off the shelf 10.5 or 10.4 that I can find listed.
There it is! part #384201. Is there any advantage to spending $138 verses the $69 for Speedways 10.5 inch disk? I would think it would be worth the extra money if it was a high horsepower motor. Hoping a local joint will have it reasonable. The Astro/S10 and Camaro all had a 9 1/8th? disk. Only the Astro 4.3 had the 11 from what I have read.
I think I wrote the part # in the wall, ill check tomorrow! its an over the counter NAPA part. I dont think its an 11 inch but I have done 5 conversions, ( 2 with Dweights set up, and 3 goulash ) I want to say the NAPA disk, my cost is about $55! and NO problems
I figured 10.5 would be fine, just hoping to find a $40 stock part down the street. You know, like the old days. I have read pretty much every T5 thread on here and the Astro disk is always recommended as a cheap/simple way to do this conversion. But never details.
I answered you first thing last night, but for some reason it didn't post, and then the whole thread dissapeared. Weird. Locally here we have a couple places I can think of, Arkie's auto parts on 25th AVE and Van Buren is about the only small shop I have found that still sells clutch stuff indevidually. If they had the Vega disc for a conversion I did lately, I'm sure yours will be a slam dunk. Centerforce is made up in Prescott, and has bailed my tail out a couple of times. There is also 4wheelers supply on 32nd st. and Oak, they do clutches too.
I did a S-10 V8 conversions in 88 and used a clutch disc and pressure plate from an Astro van and it is 11" and has the correct spline for the trans. If I remember correctly the splines needed to be about 1/2"-3/4" deeper on the input shaft to get the shaft into the pilot bearing in the crank. We did it with a speedy cut wheel by hand, worked great no problems. Also had to "flip" the hydraulic slave cylinder to get it to work in the correct direction, made a new brkt and it worked like a charm. VERY FUN to drive V8 and 5 speeds !!!!
I realize $40 might be unrealistic but I have read a hundred times of people using the 11 inch Astro disk. So far its $138 or $69 if I wait a couple of weeks. I had planned to get the Speedway disk but thought since so many used the Astro I would give it a shot. Yes Louvers, my first thread was pulled for being O/T. Guess the Mod only read the ***le and was unaware that this subject is commonly discussed on this site. I will give these companies a call today and see what I find. I will update what I find so that the next guy doing this has detailed info. Thanks for all the response.
I believe that chevy trucks also take that same clutch, i did the research when i was getting the parts for my van and got the 12" disc but 11 was an option too with the 1 1 1/16 10t spline
