Thin wire coming off the starter on my 1949 Dodge Coronet 230 flat six 6 volt. The wire comes off the starter and was routed through the spark plug wire loom to the top of the engine.... What does it connnect to? Thanx for the help... As it sits disconnected, the engine will turn over so the starter does work.

That little bastard goes to the coil. It shoots a full 6 volts to it at start up. Bypassing any resistor or wire.

I think the dude is partially right. However 6Volt vehicles do not require a resistor.

I think The Dude is correct in believing that it was put on there to get power to the coil when the engine was being cranked.

That Car hasn't been converted to 12 V at one time has It? As normally you don't put a resistor on a 6V system but at one time someone may have converted the car to 12V. Or they were just having a hard time to get the engine to start and put the wire on it then with the idea that they would get a bit more power to the coil when they cranked the engine over.

as a general rule, grounds are not hooked up to the positive battery cable:eek:

  8. Chev it looks like it is landed in the same spot as the battery hot cable. That being the case it would be hot all the time. I'm guessing that it went to some sort of an alway hot accessory or perhaps to a volt or amp meter?

Looks aftermarket to me, get rid of it. And dont screw it to the carb!

  10. I'm no Coronet expert, but I would get rid of that wire without a second thought

  11. That wire went to an electric choke on my 50 dodge, your car may have had one also. If you don't have electric choke get rid of it.
