striper, that is awesomw shot of the car, thank you! I love it! But I am disappointed of no build thread or photo album so that I can look at it more.
Use to be it was trick just to have over drive on my threespeed, than the 4 speeds were thye deel and now we 5speed and even 6. Time just rolls by
This is my 32 Tudor inside. Flathead to Toploader 4 spd to Gear Vendors Overdrive. Button on shift knob triggers Overdrive. Wires are inside the shift lever which is a Model 60 Marlin .22 gun barrel.
Three Pedals fit just fine in my 31 coupe !! As a matter of fact, I took the car out for a ride and yanked it around some today !!
Where are the "stromburg" carbs your using they sound like a rare duck might have to throw my strombergs in the junk pile and get some of those
4 speed in most, and 5 extra muncies, and 4 ford 4 speeds in the basement.I was going to make my 41 ford truck a 5 speed, but went out and bought a 3 speed for the back of my y block to have three on the tree
Whatever I drive, I want to be able to race. Simple economics. Four speeds are too expensive to put together right.

When it comes to an automatic or a stick, I say to each his own, they both have there place and work well. A hot rod would be a lot of fun with a stick and a cruiser (custom) with an automatic. Being a cruiser I'll stick to an automatic and let the hot rodders burn the rubber. CRUISER
Used to drive nothing but 4 speeds, then got lazy after the knees started to go. Now I've got two new Doug Nash 5 speeds waiting in the wings since the double knee replacement was so successful. One will go in the BBC "32 5w and the other might find it's way into the planned Nascar 9:1 SBC powered modified. Got plenty of Muncie and Ford top loader 4speeds in the stash for any future builds. The "32 2dr (avatar) will probably keep the T-400 that's currently in it, I'm still lazy. Frank
Agree totally .A basic stock 4 spd (Muncie /Toploader /833) will hold up in a 13 second car with limited traction. Now stick that 4 spd in a car that has enough motor to dip into the low 11's with slicks that will dead hook and its so long factory 4 spd .My PG in my dragcar takes a beating and keeps on going ...
I run toploaders in everything.....Nothing like a 60's 4speed and a properly tweaked shifter but I just can not get into all this t-5 stuff. I didn't grow up on Honda's so that "pro- billet/short throw/stick in a puddle of mud" feeling is just out of place in hot rod. No kidding automatics are cheaper, just like building sbc's... that doesn't mean you have to use one. Really what bummed me out was when we were first starting to get UMTR guys in the shop talking stick shift this and stick shift that. I was thinking cool, S/S is back....... when here they allow Libertys and Lencos. Cool but not the full manual only racing I hoped for.
i prefer the connection and the activity and experience of driving a manual trans. its fun. i have a four speed muncie for sale too, i got nothing to put it in- but for all the questions no one wants it. i think a T-5 works great though the 5th slot to slam the gear into is just such a good idea.
The 31 "A" roadster I've almost completed has a Ford Toploader with a Jeep Tremec 4 speed shifter cover where the top plate normally goes. This gives the appearance of a top shift early Ford trans. Rest of driveline is SBC with McCloud safety bell hsg. which has among others, a Ford trans bolt pattern, and a 3.70:1 9" rear. I have another toploader that has never been installed in a car, maybe one day I'll install a Gear Vendors overdrive on it and put that in the roadster. It is quite tight around the pedals, especially with my size 14 shoes. Dave
I put a stick in the old 59. It ain't a hot rod without a clutch in my opinion. As a matter of fact, when I went looking for an old car to buy, I wouldn't look at anything without a stick shift in it already. I wanted to make sure I didn't have to go hunting for the proper clutch set up.
4-speed with a overdrive = 5 speed. also threw in a hydraulic clutch set up so I didn't have to change gears with 2 feet on the clutch.
Tray......newbie.......buddy.....(insert best C. Walken imatation here) I like you......but.....you are not being to respectful. (No more bad sound effects) There are more rowers of the oares on this site then all the skullier teams in North America.
I did an 18 spline hemi 4-speed in my 55 Gasser. The snout was already turned down for a chevy throwout bearing so I was able to use a hydraulic one. Really helped with the linkage & works great. Oh, and it happened to have an old set of Liberty Race cogs in it. I don't mind holding it in gear when cruising.
sold a mopar 4 speed 833/OD tran with bellhousing and shifter for $250 yesterday for a early 40's Dodge truck build....was a buddie deal...
He didn't do an intro Newbie! We don't take kindly to people whom we don't know anything about coming on here and talking shit. eg. automatics are bad and sticks are Real Hot rods. He needs to respect the RULES just like you do. I think he posted this to stir the pot, he hasn't posted since and hasn't shown any car or parts to his car. IMO he needs to go away.
Quite frankly you seem like a newbie to me. Stupid intro police. He has an opinion and the balls to share it. Good for him. I take it you're driving an automatic and have to defend your manhood? Lighten up Frances. Now shut up about the stupid intro and let's get back to transmissions.
