Hot Rods where to buy 8 inch ford gears?

    So stimpy with the calculations from project 33 I should be spinning 2100 rpm at 75 with 3.80s does that sound like i will be in the ball park?

    Available first gear ratios for the T5 range from 4.03:1 to 2.95:1. When making observations regarding a "short" first gear in combination with a given rear axle ratio, it would be good to know what first gear ratio you have. Personally, I like the 2.95 first gears. They let you run lower ratio rear axles without experiencing the short first gear you mention, plus the ratio spread between gears is better, in my opinion.

    Your are correct on this info Farmalldan. I believe both of mine have 3:35 1st gears based on this info sheet:

    No, no filler hole. I think it's early Mustang, apparently pretty rare.

    Using the table, a common 3.35 T5 first gear set up with a 3.00 8" rear gives a 10.05 overall first gear overall and a 2.73 8" gives you a 9.15 overall.

    That's pretty close to an old Muncie wide ratio (2.54) box with a popular for the era 3.73 overall 9.47, and better the the close ratio Muncie (2.20) and 4.11 rear at 9.04.

    Bottom line is that there is really no overwhelming need to move from the stock 2.75 or 3.00 ratio found in most 8" rear if you are going to use a T5.

    My t5 is from a s10 and I dont know the ratios. but when I do the math from project 33 site I will be at 1600 to 1700 rpms at 75, I dont think thats going to cut it.

    i would get the car done and drive it, i drove mine in 4th alot on the highway for short trips, and when i could run faster 5th was great for 80-85 and 26 mpgs i had 750-16's with 3.00 gears i was happy i hated the short first gear when i had 3.55's

    Looks like the common T5 ratios in the S10 were 4.03:1 first with .85 OD 5th, and 3.76:1 first with a .72 OD. ratio. There is conflicting info on the web which shows minor variations to this depending on specific applications, but these numbers seem close without having the tag information off a particular transmission.

    The 4,03 S10 with a 3:00 8" is the same first gear overall as a 2.20 Muncie and 5.86 gears: Pretty unusable for the street. The 3.76 helps, bringing the close ratio equivalent to 5.13.

    I agree with Window Licker: Build the car and try it out before blowing a bunch of money on a set of gears which may move you from the frying pan into the fire.
