I have a 3 ton NAPA floor jack and two sets of jack stands from Sears, one set larger than the other.

Jacking up the Model A is fairly simple: Jack stands under the front and rear axles.

Jacking up one of my Packards is not as simple. I have been using jack stands under the rear axle housing, and for the front, under outside edge of the A-arms. However, after reading these posts, I will not be placing stands under the A-arms.

What do HAMBers think of ramps under the front tires (turned in opposite directions so the car cannot roll off) the car would be jacked up and ramps placed (not driven onto the ramps), and jack stands under the rear axle housing to raise both sides of the car?

One of my least liked jobs is jacking up a car and working under it. I too give the car a good shake to make sure every thing is stable. I do my work on a concrete floor in my garage. Thanks.

  2. Ramps are great if they are sturdy and built well. Problem is I haven't seen a retail or commercially produced set like that in decades. The next problem is that they like to slide when mounting them and something must be done to prevent that. Since you speak of turning them the opposite way I'll be assuming you won't be driving up the ramps anyway. If that's the case then the placement of 10" rim under the tire posted before would work well for a short time. I'd be concerned about point loading the tireson ethe edges of the rim for extended periods of time.

There is no 100% correct & fits all & fool proof way to do it . Every job is different and so is every fool. So every setting of stands is slightly different.
Add in some sort of structural repair being done and the entire game changes.

I'm glad someone did ask about this, too many people have been killed needlessly because they took a shortcut and didn't use stands or used cheap stands. I don't see as much safety stuff passed along as it should be, plenty of info on here about anything mechanical ,but it tends to turn into a macho thing when it comes to safety stuff, you can't work on or enjoy your car if you're dead

this ought to wake people up, this was a local guy,a firefighter, he got in a hurry and didn't chock the wheels on his blazer when it was on ramps, it rolled on top of him and he suffocated, his MOTHER found him, how long would it have taken to even put a brick behind the tires? something to think about. he was 38. I went to his funeral, dead for lack of something that would have taken a few seconds to do, something to think about with those cheap stands too, isn't your life worth the extra money to buy good ones? the question is how fast can you move when they start to fail? if you have any warning. Cheap tools won't kill you, a cheap jack won't kill you, pretty much nothing cheap will kill you except for the stands holding the car over your melon
