Question for the Hamb. What is a good place for selling a car? Seems there is good and bad on here about E-bay. Needing to sell some vehicles off and looking for a good outlet. Thanks.
I haven't tried it yet but everyone that I have spoken with that is selling cars and actually getting it done is doing on the bay. I have had good luck with Craigslist, but you have to wade through the sea of people who have no idea what they are looking at.
Take it to some of the major car shows (if it an older car). Ill. is not far from Wis. so Jefferson , for example, would be a good place if you can wait.
There is nothing wrong with eBay as an outlet....or source...for that matter. However, that said, the methods a seller employs has a lot to do with results. For instance, selecting the pricing style..i.e. Buy It Now....or Make Offer, or Auction......or just for sale at an advertised fixed price. Also, photos, lots of 'em....and a really honest description...good and bad. I suggest you spend some time on eBay Motors, looking at car ads in the category you intend to sell and see which ads appeal to you and those that don't and take note of. That will help guide you when preparing your own ads. The HAMB cl***ifieds is good too, and certainly nothing prevents you from using more than one venue. Cars-on-Line.com is another good outlet. The wider the audience, the better the chance of connecting with a buyer. Ray
Don't limit yourself, put a sign in the windshield then list it everywhere you can. Try to reach every audience you can.
Ray, I spend quite a bit of time looking at hot rods on the bay. Never had sold anything on there yet.
What my original thoughts were too trade one to three vehicles on one car but that seems like it isn't going to happen anytime soon.
You know you can list it for sale in more than one place, don't you? Listing it in the HAMB cl***ified, on craigslist and on Epay with a reserve or buy it now could be done.
eBay is NOT the place to sell a car! Cars very rarely meet the reserve as everyone is afraid their going to pay too much. After the auction ends your phone will ring off the hook as very weirdo in country will start calling you. One of the best places to sell is at a large car show like the NSRA Nats and Shades Of The Past where buyers can actually see the cars rather then just see pictures as with long distance sale. Usually lots of buyers with cash. Why not try the HAMB Cl***ifieds? Theres no listing fee or commission.
...wish I knew the magic place to sell cars/projects also,...I have projects for sale , some cheap, some not so, but seems hard to move anything right now, maybe due to the economy or the fact that car guys usually have more cars than they need already. It's easy to buy stuff, not so easy to liquidate. ...I suggest you try ebay, lots more people will see it that way than any other...I may try it myself and have a friend list it for me as I'm not set up on ebay right now. good luck with yours, let me know if you need any help.
I've sold a lot of cars, my experience has been you usually take a bath on a project. Your better off getting it running and driving. A running driving car in the high teens to low 20's is your best bet. Anything priced higher the number of potential buyers drops significantly. Gary
If they're clean and in good running condition try Hemmings. I've sold several cars through them in the last few years. They seem to get a higher quality of buyer over Craigslist and eBay. Also, if you use Craigslist, put them on several in different cities. I'm in the Louisville area and besides the local one I advertise on the CL of Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Nashville. You'll need to use a different email address for each ad but you can get as many as you want for free from Yahoo. Good luck....
bottom line - no magic way to sell - just need to find a buyer - be in the right place at the right time - I put a For Sale sign in a 60's car that I had and then drove to a place for lunch. guy riding by on his bike bought it. Took about an hour to find a buyer that way. other times it has taken months placing ads, going to shows, etc.
The biggest factor of all is you need to have something of value that appeals to the largest number of buyers. Last car I sold was a real nice 62 Impala wagon at the NSRA Nats. It sold immediately. Wish I had five of them for sale as I believe I cold have sold them all as wagons are a hot item right now. A little luck also goes a long way. Gary
All of those are pretty specific markets. Falcon - ebay, racing junk 27 roadster, major car show that maches the build style, HAMB, ebay Truck - hard to say, gotta be a certain buyer to pay up for a pristine 90's truck, maybe broker thru a large local chevy dealer used lot. Seems like new dealers can move older low mileage better than anyone else.
Hotrodhotline is a good place. Last time I used them it was like $60 for six months. I think its even cheaper now.
Yes, there is concern on a buyer's part as to what he will get for his money with a car he has not examined. However, there are many vehicles sold on eBay. I know, I have sold several....and bought a few. Another factor that enters into it is this.....the 'double standard' ..or more tactfully stated..there is a difference in the mindset of a buyer vs the same person as a seller. How many posts do we read here wherein a HAMBER is crowing about the smokin' deal he got on something somewhere. He might not have bought it at any higher amount, even at what might be considered "fair market value". EDITED >Yet, the same guy expects to get at least what he perceives as "fair market value" when he is the seller. That term..."fair market value", is hard to define with goods not sold in large numbers and in varying condition. Ray
For HAMB friendly vehicles, I've done one trade and also sold a project through the HAMB cl***ifieds. Both deals were in the $13-15k value range. I also sold a finished car on eBay for a bit over $17k. I'm just giving values so you have something for reference. My thought is that it's important to be realistic on the value of what you have and don't confuse it with what you have invested. My labor is always sold at a huge discount and sometimes is even free . But it's a hobby for me. I'm not saying that your stuff has been overpriced, just offering my observations. I've seen your 27 T listed here for a long time and am surprised it hasn't sold. Seems like a fair asking price for a finished car. I tried talking my brother into looking into it. Best of luck.
I'm very happy with the response I'm getting right here in the HAMB cl***ifieds. I'm sending my Alliance membership money in this week.
I've bought and sold on eBay and the HAMB, they work just fine if you use your head, common sense is your best friend!!
Sold a car on ebay with an honest description, lost money on the deal. Guy came to pick it up, spent an hour going over it all and completed the deal. He left in the rain down the 2.5 miles of gravel I live on, drove it 1.5 hours home, then leaves negative feedback about how filthy the car was. Yes it sold but you just have to love humanity.
I hear what your saying Ray. Not here to "cut a fat hog", just trying to get a realistic price on them.
