Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by CalGasser, Mar 21, 2009.

  1. maz, this was long ago, but Foothill used to make a right turn and continued up to what was later called New York drive. and Inn-N-Out was on Walnut till about 1954-55.
My brother just sent me some old photo's. I had a Triumph Bonneville in 1959 still had it in '62 when I bought my all time favorite memory car. a 374 ci Packard powered 51 Oldsmobile running 13 1/2 to 1 compression that ran on the way to expensive 39 cent a gallon Custom Supreme 104 octane white pump. 4:88's and a Art Carr hydro. got 2 mpg tops

In '62 I was a Junior in H.S. in Rapid City, SD ...Hangin', Cruisin', Boozin', & Raisin' whatever kind ruckus we could find to! If I had to roll in one of Dad's it was a '54 Bel Air or a '64 Impala, the beggar was they were both wagons. But, a couple of my pals had nice rides, so shotgun was OK by me. I was lusting after Triumph Bonnevilles, BSA Rocket Goldies, and any car radically lowered w/ lakes pipes, flippers, & louvers; and wishing my Dad would get transferred to SoCal!

In '62, Navy boot camp then Submarine School in New London, Conn.

First sea duty was the Cuban missile blockade then spent the Viet Nam war years patroling North Atlantic. I can proudly say there were no Viet Cong attacks on the bars in Bergen, Norway on my watch.

Car was a '51 Dodge 426 (four wheels, two doors and six cylinders).

  14. I was 14 in '62 and car crazy. My buddy, Ken and I built cool modified bikes and built lotsa models...we'd sneak out at night and walk downtown to watch the hotrods and customs cruise town. Late in '62 we rode our custom bikes downtown to the chevy dealer showroom to check out the first new '63 corvette stingray to hit town...it was a split window coupe in dark blue....a very dull dark blue to help cover up the terrible wavy bodywork! Begged a ride in every hotrod I could. Began saving $$$ for my first car.

i was 3 years old and in los angeles, but you wouldn't catch me missing out on this glorious era--- that's my dad's 54 crestline behind me with the original black on yellow california plate.. sadly he sold her in 1964 and bought a nova wagon to accomodate our growing Mormon family...

In 62 I was 10 living in Reseda in Cali. Dad ran Auto Part Emporium on Van Nuys Blvd. Two big events in my life. Filmed a Crest Toothpaste commerical on my birthday in Feb. Filmed at Griffith Park by the carousel. Found it on YouTube last year. Weird times we live in. Made $8K in residuals in three years. Assembled my first engine with dad supervising. A Studebaker 289 bored .060 with Jahns 12 to 1 pistons, Grantell Enterprises (The Granatelli Brothers) R2 camshaft and heads ported by dad. That baby really ran. We built it in the back of the auto parts store. Parts in front, machine shop in back. I was hooked. Dad took me to Bob's Big Boy on the blvd. to celebrate the event. I loved working with dad on Wednesdays nights. He was open until 8PM. I would sit outside the store and watch the show. Cruising was just starting to catch on big time. Great memories.
