I've read they don't mix at all, but I'm sure an expert will chime in soon.

    From Duplicolors website:

Can Enamels be used over lacquers?

Yes. Dupli-Color® enamels can be sprayed over lacquer substrates, or any other painted surface that has been sanded smooth and clean of dirt, grease, and dust.

Can Lacquers be used over enamels?
Lacquers have a tendency to lift enamel surfaces. Lacquers will work over most fully cured enamels that have good film integrity. Test carefully in an inconspicuous area before proceeding.

Enamel over lacquer, if you do it the other way it will lift and wrinkle.

Yup, exactly, plenty of synthetic and acrylic enamel shot over lacquer and lacquer primers in the old days.
You probably could shoot Lacquer over enamel, if an 2k epoxy sealer was sprayed over the enamel substrate first.....

I remember it this way- liquor before beer, always be clear. It applies to lacquer before enamel too.

If your enamel does not have a hardener, it doesn't matter, both can have the same affect. The solvent in your new topcoat will soften the paint underneath. This is what causes wrinkles. We developed a product called "wrinkle free" that is a low solids film that acts as a adhesion promoter. It has non aggressive solvents in it, that will create a barrier if you think it might wrinkle.
I just sprayed test panels this past week, enamel over lacquer and lacquer over enamel, with no issues using the wrinkle free. However the film did soften a little at first, but no issues with lift, durability or gloss.
