I have a 1953 Flathead Ford engine with a 1952 Mercury 3 speed transmisson and I need to see which drive shaft I will need to get from this trans to a 1948 Ford Truck F100 rear end. Is there a perticular drive shaft to get or does it make a difference. Here is a picture of the trans and the rear end. Thanks Frenchy <!-- / message --><!-- attachments -->
I' pretty sure the front slip type yokes for the cars are the same in this time frame so you'd need one of them. The F1 driveshafts are the same from 52 clear back to 42 with the standard 3-speed and 7/8" shorter for heavy duty 3-speed & 4-speed. All the commercial shafts are longer than the car shafts with the exception of the 51 car with auto trans but not by much. What is this set up going into? That rear axle looks like a 50 or later F1 Dana 44. They should have a 44 casting mark in the right side lower web where it meets the axle housing just under the bulls eye. You may have to have one lengthened or shortened depending on your application. We have at least one drive shaft shop here in SA that can do that work including balancing. Tempe should have at least one somewhere nearby.
