I was told that on high speed cars the holes in the Moon wheelcovers enlarge to the point that you have to start over. What size and thread is the best bolt or screw to keep the wheelcovers on?
You "used" to be able to use 6 fasteners to hold them in place and be legal. Don't know if that's still legal. I have a set (16") on my street car right now with 6 fasteners, no problem. I used 8-32 stainless, ****on head fasteners. Drilled and hand taped into aluminum wheel rims. Look into the rules again. I found that on steel wheels on the street, the wheels flex enough to tear up the disc. But with the newer nylon washer and 6 fasteners, they hold up well. Mike
I also used 6 number 10-32 screws to hold on my Moon discs. Years ago. The Dzus fasteners (3 of them) are almost universally used on Bonneville cars for years. Cleaner. Much more likely to check your tire pressure. Much less likely to fall out and stick in somebodys tire.
Ok before everyone busts my balls about the car...its our spare family beater that everyone drives when needed. 120 horse..5 speed..candy apple red and moon disks !!! They were free from a friend who couldn't use them cause they were 14s. Back to the question...mine are held on by 3 stainless 8/32s and haven't had a problem yet ! I use 6/10-32's ****on head Allen screws on steel wheels and 6/ 10-24's in my aluminum wheels. All SCTA legal. 3 Dzus are very popular now and Moon can supply the pattern cut disc.
Back in '84, I had Moon discs with 6 screws on the stock Chevy wheels on my daily driver Camaro. After a while, I'd lost a couple discs due to wheel flex. I also didn't check the tire pressure as I was used to because of the h***le. But they still looked better than the snap-ons.
