I'm wanting to add a flamethrower kit to my Impala. Who likes what brands and at what price? There seem to be a lot of them out there which a large range in pricing.

    Thanks

before you actually install one.....take time to do some research on these. you must realize that with these kits...you will be dumping raw gas into your engine, which will wash oil off the cylinders. this leads to alot of bad engine problems later down the road. i personally have one of the autoloc kits on my 55, but it is very rare that i actually use it anymore. i used it a few times when i first hooked it up...and that was before i realized that i would be destroying my engine. there are several kits out there, and they all basically do the same thing. the kit that i got, i won off e-bay for $10.00, and it was brand new in the box (minus the coils, spark plugs, and wires). one other thing to consider is that you will have to devise a way to get the spark plugs into the exhaust pipes. either by using a weld in bung or something. i went to auto zone, and bought 2 spark plug anti-foulers...and i used them to screw the plugs into the pipes. flames are cool, and i'm guilty of shooting them myself...but, it is bad news for an engine.
the only way around that is with a propane injection system...and those can get costly.

I am interested in this as well. I got an autoloc kit for free, going to put that in my 49 Merc. Putting a shitty 302 in there, so if it huffs and cropdusts and eventually blows up, oh well. Couldnt really care less.

I have one that comes with $20- bucks worth of Taco Bell food and a Zippo lighter- This kit retails for $59.99 and is very reliable- I've impressed all my friends with the results! (but how long does it take eyebrows to grow back- DON'T ask!) ;)

    Nice flat black hot rods...

    Stop reading Rebel Rodzzzz.

Why does the internet make people think that others give a shit about thier opinion?

Hoping people chime in. Friend of mine on here has a nice setup, homemade, and says the autoloc kit is junk.

In fact it was in more than once. You must have as many posts over there as you do here. They pull them off the internet and publish them.

I have a kit that a friend gave me. It uses a motor with points mounted to it, spark plugs, some switches, and weld in bungs. It looks like its probably 30 years old, and NOS. I'll post a pic of it tomorrow, Im too tired tonight. I'm waiting to use it on my next project (whenever that is) thats going to be more of a fun beater car. I like flame throwers, but frankly, my curent project doesnt really call for them.

my auto loc kit works fine, but like i said, i don;t use it very often. the one i have is actually the single exhaust kit...but i wired 2 coils to it...no problem. shoots about a 4-5 foot fireball out of both pipes if i play with the choke. but, i'm going to take it off the car to remove the temptation when i'm at cruise nights.
it's not worth having to re-build the engine for a little fun.
if i was going to do it again, i'd go with an external fuel source...such as propane. but at that point, i might as well put it on my daily driver. i think things tend to get stupid at that point.

I have the autoloc system on my car and it works really well and have had it for 4 years. No problems yet, just change your oil alot more.

As far as plug placement, rule of thumb is 3-6 inches. The farther in the plug the shorter the flame but too close and you wont get a good flame.

Plus the size of the flame depends on how much air and fuel your motor can push. Hope any of this helps.

    Good luck and flame on

i agree the autoloc and similar can hurt your engine . i know also personally.but you can make an injected setup which will have no affect on your engine and give you flames like this

What's bad for your engine? Just the running rich to make the flames? Then wouldn't ALL kits be bad for you motor?

Sounds like it would be easier to somehow make it quick and easy to adjust your fuel/air mixture... I've also hear of putting a fuel injector nozzle in the pipe just like the propane...

Not all the kits use the fuel from the engine. The problem with using unburnt fuel from the engine is the raw fuel gets past your rings and washes the oil off of the cylinder wall and contaminates the oil in the crankcase also.

google spit fire flame throwers , this is the kit that im going to use on my 53 chev . they make 2 different kits , one for " show " and another fo street , the show kit is fuel injected into the exhaust and is supposed to cost about 250 for all the goodies . The street kit is the " ruin your engine " kit ( wouldnt go there )

injected kits dont harm your engine

  20. Had a 57 Cad with flamethrowers on it for a few years. The rings were washed out from all the raw gas. It had so much blow-by it looked like it was on fire at a stop light, and it would blow the breather off all the time..

  22. anyone?

I've collected a few propane ideas utilizing diesel engine glow plugs and a NOS fogger.

OK this is not a car, nor a HAMB era vehicle at all, but.. sortof relelvant.
It's a Turbo Triumph a friend owns, we got sick of the smell of unburnt gas since he was running it rich (11.5 or 12 to 1) to keep the turbo healthy.
All he did was Tig weld a generic Cat converter in the exhaust, they work on heat and donce it gets hot enough it ignites the unburnt fuel. Looks funny ass hell at night in traffic. I was first to ride it after we did this, gets a little warm on the back of your right leg...

The point here is.. maybe something like this could be used to passsively ignite fuel in a car instead of a spark setup ? You just can't turn it off unless you control it by mixture.

Go get an HEI and couple it to a heater motor with a piece of heater hose. Hook up the spark plugs in the tailpipe and have at it. Just be careful that no one is standing behide you when you light it up. Make sure you have seamless mufflers because the seamed ones could be like a gernade if it sucks the fire back up thru. Change your oil more often and have a ball. It 's almost like a drug. I've don't it for years and never trashed a motor. I suppose it could happen but then an airplane could fall out of the sky and hit you too! Don't do the injected deal. That's like really dangerous!! Let these clowns say what they want. They bad mouth doing this all the time yet they've probably never done it. Some of the best people I know, I met thru shooting fire. It's sorta like a brotherhood. Go have fun and don't let these creeps stop you if you want to do it. Done

Use the spark box from one of the kits, but don't wire it to cut out ignition....use some propane bottles used for camp stoves, some tubing running to the pipes from bottles with an LP solenoid inline, activates when spark box is tripped....have plugs at end of pipes with propane injected a 6"-12" before plugs.....

Okay, just my daily driver late model. It has a spitfire setup. Totally seperate fuel system, which is cool, cause you can run anything you want through it, alcohol, gas, deisel (makes lots o smoke and stinks!). Requires some fab work, and about $350-$400 bucks out the door. I use a moon tank inside the bed, its own fuel pump, NOS solenoid, 2 Coils, 2NOS foggers. Does not fuck with the engine at all. A little corny, but definately fun!

Please no mini trucker jokes, just thought it was a little relevant.

If you have an old enough, crappy enough motor running rich shouldn't there be enough unburned fuel to burn w/o shutting off the spark....

sorry to sound stupid, but could you elaborate on that a little?
plus, what wiring/electrical parts do you need?
I had wondered about running a stand-alone tank in the trunk, feeding a fuel or injection pump. Run that pump so it's feeding an injector in the tailpipe, mounted in front of a spark plug. activate the spark plug as the fuel passes over it, that kind of thing?
