Hey fellow rodders currently with my hotrod project I chose a to run a later T5 5 speed (from a 86camaro) with my engine choice a 250ci straight 6 chevy. I bought the transmission for $400 . Did i make a wise choice? or should i search for another. The plan for the 4dr 32 chevy was to make it a cruiser and not be hard on it. but i think that may be hard to abide by. Will the ****** hold up to the stock torque my straight 6 is dishing out? What would be a better choice? Preferable I would like to have the ****** be light in weight. Do i need to look at a top loader 5 speed?
The T-5 should be just as, or more, reliable in your '32 Chevy as in it's original application. It's probably the lightest weight suitable 5 speed trans. Sounds like a good choice to me. edit: While the general info above is okay as far as it goes, there is a difference between T-5 trans from early to later versions. The earlier are referred to as NWC (non-World Cl***) and the later WC (World Cl***). The difference primarily being in the bearings vs bushings as I recall. However, that difference does allow for a little more torque capacity. Also, there are various gear sets with 1st gear from slightly over 4 to 1 to about 2.95 to 1 and also significant variation in 5th Overdrive ratio as well. So, picking the T-5 with a ge****t that works best for your application (i,e, rear end gears, tire size, engine torque etc.) is important in achieving satisfactory results. Go to www.BritishV8.com for a complete listing of applications, gear set ratios and codes that identify them. Enter Borg Warner T-5 in search box. Ray
Take a look at the inliners.org site on the hybrid T-5. Good choice. Oh.... I see you did. Best engineer is ME Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
