I have a SBC in my 37 Ford Truck Chassis. the block number is 3349852 I can't seem to find it on SBC mortec ID site. It has both the side and front motor mount holes. Now it is mounted with an 'across the front' mount, which (I think ) is a Corvette mount. I think it might be a late fifties Corvette motor, not sure. The valve covers are Corvette, but that's no proof. It actually has a 12v generator on it, mounted on top and on the passenger side. Any ideas on how to confirm this motor?? Vocal history on this chassis says it was built in the late fifties.
Probably 3849852, I get the 8's and 3's screwed up sometimes too. 283, 57-66. There are way more Corvette valve covers around than Corvette's. What is the code on the front pad of the block?
There is no such casting number. The castings were often rough on the early blocks, and it could be that your second "3" is actually a "8"? This would make your casting number 3849852. This would make your block (according to my book anyways) a 1957-1966 2 Bolt Main 283 Small Block Chevrolet. Hope this helps.
Thanks, I will check the front pad tomorrow morning.........I will also check the numbers again carefully. Back soon.
OK, you were right, the casting numbers were quite rough, it is an 8 instead of a three, 57-66 283,220hp, 2 bolt main. I looked at the tab in front of the passenger side head, and it's blank, somebody must of decked the block at one time. Thanks gentlemen.......
That's that rare optional motor that seems to show up in old Fords. Sometimes known as the Belly Button. Yep, I have one too!
In your case, the casting as a 58-up since it has the side mount bosses, pre-58 blocks had no provision for side mounts. The crossmount you have up front is a Hurst-style mount if it bolts to the block at the front peg-mount locations. The early Corvette mounts actually were between the Water pump and block and the mount ears were high unlike than the low ears of the Hurst-style mounts.
Refining the info on the 3849852 block - it was first used in the truck line in 1963. It was a new 283 design used in passenger cars and Chevelles beginning in 1964 and used through 1966. It may have been used in the 1968 model year as well. With a nodular iron crank the block is relieved at the bottom of the cylinders to clear the crank weights. With a forged steel crank, there are no reliefs. You can also check the date code cast into the top of the bellhousing flange on the right side - the block casting number is on the top left. The date code numbers are smaller and are an alphanumeric code. For example: D285 wud be April 28, 1965; C74 wud be March 7, 1964; and K963 wud be November 9, 1963. The blocks were made in either Flint (F) or Tonawanda (T). Usually the T blocks had the double digit year code. Hope that helps!
