I do not know about the eco's but I had a f-1 with a smallblock chevy and o.g. brakes and it stopped the truck just fine.

I had econoline front brakes on my little modified, mounted on an A axle. The brake shoes are about 2.5 inches wide like you said. Stopped great, especially in that light car.

I do not know of any side by side comparison, but I would think the extra surface area on the econoline would be an advantage. The F-1 I think is a little larger diameter, seems to my memory the econoline were 10-inch. Sold the car so i am not able to check. The econoline does have a rather large steering arm that is not as nice looking.

Econoline drums are not available in aftermarket, so make sure you get a good set if you go that way. Econoline is same as pass car bolt pattern 5 on 4.5. So it will match up with a 8-inch (or pass car 9-inch) rear nicely.
