Hello, Out of the old hot rods and drag racing cars we have built or owned, we miss the 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery the most. It was the first car that I bought with my own money, had tons of fun in it, driving all over So Cal. The teenage experience with the sedan delivery just fit into the times for me. The drag racing days were coming to a close and there needed to be some alternative to enjoying something again. So, the sedan delivery supplemented our adventures to last a lifetime of memories. In thinking back, the teenage ego was/is a big thing. The sedan delivery gave me the chance to be different, stylish and a little off key, being a So Cal surfer in a hot rod world. The girls liked the sedan delivery, as it made them someone different rather than the flowing skirt, short sweater, “bop” girls from high school. The parents did not like the sedan delivery, but that was understandable. The look of the pristine 1958 Chevy Impala was what they liked to see sitting on their driveway. The sedan delivery was not a problem for teenagers, though. If someone drove up to your granddaughter’s house with a sedan delivery or van, what would a parent or grandparents think? Whoa…not tonight and slam the door. Or, sorry, no milk deliveries today, please. As far as the Impala was concerned, it had parent approval as it looked like a fancy, well kept car. Little did they know that it was also one of the fastest, if not the fastest in Bixby Knolls, during our time period. Jnaki All of those trivial matters aside, the sedan delivery took us to new adventures, new places and new friends. So, it was under powered and not a fast hot rod or cool, fixed up cruiser. It was the basic, Flathead powered, plain Jane, surf adventure mobile. It opened up our eyes to different places and different ways to look at the world. What did we get in return? The cool factor was in place every time we went to a surf movie at a high school auditorium or the local college theater. We had to drive in front of the long line to get in and got stares that would not stop. Of course, that was the whole point of being a teenage surfer, notoriety. (Besides the hot rides on those cool waves) When I sold the sedan delivery to some surfer from Huntington Beach, I saw it parked in front of a surf shop on Main St. Immediately, memories came flooding through and a ton of envy set in like no other…But, for me, that was a lifetime ago, even though it was only a month after college in Northern California. At the time, I did miss it and what it gave me while growing up. The whole teenage experience with the 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery was so much fun. As “20 somethings,” my wife and I decided to buy another one to fix up and cruise around. Being a 20 something just had that “screw the world” attitude. The sedan delivery gave us privacy, cool cruising and this time, lots of power and comfort. (a 327 vs. a Flathead). It needed a lot of fixing, but we had the energy and attitude for it. It also gave us some credibility as photographers and hot rod enthusiasts. When going to near and far away photo shoots all over So Cal, it showed that we meant business and knew our stuff. I would like to have my 50 Chrysler 8 passenger sedan back,I thought it was a little too rusty for my skills but now think I could handle it and would make a great road car with updated drivetrain and had plenty of room in it.
