Have a 65 390 FE and a 69 429. They are both regular motors, no Boss or Interceptor's. If I build the 429 it would have Hilborn injection. If I build the 390 it would have a blower on it. One will go in a 64 F-100 short wide. It will be for my son. Something we'll do together. It's his truck. It does not really matter to him which motor we use (he's ten years old) he say's as long as it beats those front wheel drive pieces of CRAP! So what do you think, let us know........
Its been awhile sense i messed with any Fords but Id take that 429 and turn it into a 427. I think its just the heads and crank that makes the difference if im remembering right.
I had a 1967 Mustang Fastback with a 390cu.in with a 4bbl and it woulld out run just about everything I raced. To put a blower on it, it would be crazy fast. George
the 429 is a 385 series and the 390/427s were FE engines. You could make a 406 out of the 390, but you can't make a 427 out of a 429 as they are completely different engines so parts won't interchange. I like FEs, but my recommendation would be the 429 as those engines rock!
I personaly like the FE motors. But the down side to build one is the cost. The 385 series engines are much cheaper to build and parts are more readily available. The 429/460 engines are some of the most reliable engines ford ever built. It is said that there are parts of these engines still enbeded in the wall at ford test facility. Well I hope I have helped a little. I know alot about these two engine families..if you have any questions feel free to ask.
Either one of those motor's in a pickup for a kid? You should go out and have him pick his tree now. Seriously, that's a lot of horsepower in a truck, either motor. I'm not just yanking your chain here, I grew up with lots of kids that had trucks, the big motor trucks usually ended up wrecked. Some kids weren't so lucky...for what it's worth...
I vote 390. The 429 is in a different family with the 460 I believe. The FE engine was probably an original option for that truck.
i'm partial to the fe's tons of torque , guy around here has one running a blower , runs it at the local track , cant make an actual pass cause its to fast for the eigth mile track since he doesnt have a cage ! but as stated above maybee you should think of sompthing a little less powerfull for a kid , dad bought a 67 mustang with a 428 cobra jet , luckily i got caught driving it before i was of age so it was taken away and i redid it a few years back , i was pretty iresponsible back then with all that power at my disposal , dont know if that car would have survived if i had it given to me at first !
I want you guy to know I am NOT going to turn him loose with the truck. But I would like to do this project with him and drive it together. He has already told me that he wants to go to college and he said he wants to get a job in high school and get a little late model truck ...S-10 or such for college. He's on the Honor Roll and for ten more responsible than I was..... keep the replies coming it will help us decide. and thanks from Warren it's his truck.....
My daughters truck is a '64 long box, either engine will fit with ease. I'd go with the 429 with the injection setup. Less hassle, much more fun.
You lost me!!! Told you its been awhile since ive messed with a Ford. Plus ive nevered owned a big block. Small blocks are so much cheaper to build and you can reevvvv them more often without spinning a bearing. Ive had friends with that problem.
