i have some model a bones and a 37 wishbone and spindles...wanna use split bones for a stock model a frame with a flathead and full fendered 29 rpu...which bones are the preferred?....the model a's look cleaner but are shorter....i read all the search stuff i could find, but didn't really get an answer, just kept seeing posts about 32 bones. thanks, george
Your 37 wishbones will work well with a stock or dropped Model A axle. Most aftermarket dropped axles will work as well.
The later would be abit stronger than the A's, although the a's work fine in any appl. It is more of a space/looks decision, i don't think you will see much of them on a fendered car.
I have used A bones, they are short, may not work for all cars. Also like the late bent bones in some applications, using them on my Tudor.
What are you doing for shocks on the front? If you are planning on using lower mounts that bolt onto the bottom of the wishbone using the spring perch bolt, you'll need Model A. The '35-'48 bones obviously have a much thicker upper boss with the spring out in front of the axle, and there isn't a perch bolt that is long enough. The "extra long" ones are even too short and will strip or break.
hmmm...now everyone seems to recomend the 37,but what are you using for shocks?....does the length of the bones affect the ride?i haven't started the build quite yet,so i could locate a different set of bones if needed, but i was trying to use what i already had. thanks, george
I like the A's. You can cut the loop an inch past the weld and just drill and tap. You don't have to weld anything. Dress it up by rounding it with a grinder.
A bones are straight where they mount to the axle, so you have to move your rear mount lower on the frame unless you pie cut them to add caster, 37-40 have a few degrees of caster in them. And my personal opinion A's are way to short and don't look proportioned correctly.
I built my rpu originally with '35-'40's and swapped out to A's because of the shock issue. Another difference, again with the upper boss...using the A bones over the later ones will get you a half inch lower. Something I found out in the swap, which required changing steering arms and relocating the tie rod underneath the bones for frame clearance. I don't think either looks better than the other, just depends on the application. I wouldn't use '42-'48's though, way too long. Oh, and considering this will be a full fendered truck, the longer the arm, the more issues you will have with clearance.
