OK, here's a weird one for ya; my '67 Vette (same body style as the '63 on up, so I hope this is considered ON topic, lol) has been sitting for 3 weeks in a dry garage, it never gets colder than 40 degrees. The motor is an L79 (327/350hp). I haven't touched the car at all in those 3 weeks. Yesterday, I popped the hood to re-install the air cleaner that I had left off last time I worked on it. I found that the PCV rubber hose shown in the photo was coated in oil! Just the top of the hose had this oil on it, not the bottom, not the PCV itself nor the oil fill tube. Everything else is clean and dry, the way I left it. So how on earth does this happen? Anyone else ever experience this? I hope the photo shows this phenomena. Let me know your thoughts. My guess would be that the heat of the engine has baked the oil off the bottom of the hose. maybe try turning the hose upside down for a while and see if the same thing happens or it doesnt come back.
I've had this happen too..I have no idea how the oil gets through the hose material but it will..[maybe it's fuel line?] Mine was ok after I changed to a new, quality NAPA PVC hose.
Didn't this happen to Mr Harrison's McLaren as well? (I look, at the PCV cap, it needs cleeaaning...) (insert title here...) OK, I'll be quiet now.
It could be that the hose is a petrolium product (unless it is real rubber) and it is deteriorating (breaking down) IE the petrolium part of it is ooozing out. Try this compair your motor oil to what is ooozing out of the hose. Wipe the hose with your finger and smell it, then pull your dipstick and smell it. Are they the same?
There is a special emissions hose. It is printed right on the hose. Regular hose is not the same. I had to stock it.
I just made that up. Actually I didn't I have seen hoses do that and they had nothing to do with oil. SDomething else to check is that all the other hoses and upper surfaces are not also getting oil slicked. Sometimes an engine will blow oil mist out of the breather; in a Corvette as tight as the engine compartment is that will be a problem and will manifest itself on the tops of hoses, spark plug wires, distributer caps etc.
Is that like "My guitar gently weeps?" My guess is that the oil vapors are permeating the hose, actually going through the pores. Possibly the reason is that hot oil vapors rise, and are coming through the top of the hose only. I have had pcv hoses get sticky over time myself and just thought it was the hot oil being drawn through them in vapor form. But as mentioned they make special hose for that purpose which should clear it up. Don
Benno, this all transpired while the engine was just sitting. It wasn't like that when i put it away and was working on the air filter assembly. That's what is confuzzling me so much. I could understand it if it happened while it was running, but the weeping (or whatever!) happened while the engine was sitting cold. Weird science going on here! PCV specific hose? I'll look into that. My next step is to pull the hose and see what's lurking inside. I'll report back later tonight. Thanks guys!
That would indeed be funny! And cool. But none of my friends are that clever. LOL. I took the hose off today and it's bone dry inside. But even after wiping it dry, after a few minutes, it continues to weep out oil, as if it's soaked with oil. Freaky. I replaced it with a "PCV hose" that I got from the local parts store. We'll see how that goes.
