I recently upgraded my Model A with a 283 from a Saginaw 3sp to a NWC T5. I bought one that already had the tailhousing from an S10. I am pretty happy with the results except for a BAD whine in 3rd gear. The rebuilder warranted it for one year and this whine has been there since the first time I drove it after the trans. change. I used atf for the fluid. Does anyone have any ideas that will help before I take it back out crate it up and send it back across country? Banana peels, sawdust? https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1636162023154499
Have you called and talked to the rebuilder yet? Let him know how you feel about it and see what he has to say. Sent from my SM-G900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The rebuilder said to drive it for 1000 miles and then get back to him. I personally don't think a whine this bad is going away in that short of a time if ever. I have sent him this same video.
I rebuilt a 39 Ford transmission with all NOS or new vintage aftermarket gears from various brands. This was about 3,000 miles ago and it still has a bit of whine sometimes. I think if the gears weren't made by the same manufacturer there might be enough tolerance difference that they take a LONG time to fully mesh.
Whine?? That's a howling pack of wild dogs chasing you. Send that back ASAP. Not even close to being acceptable.
Since the rebuilder has heard that awful whine from the video and recommended a 1000 mile run in, that's exactly what I would do, but ONLY IF YOU HAVE THAT IN WRITING!!!!
I would never put up with that for 1000 miles, sent back. A rebuilt trans should never sound like that.
Got to agree with the fellows on this one. You want to drive the vehicle not be repairing , worried or disgruntled. The silver lining is telling everyone you got a M 22 and that's what they do. But seriously you don't need problems happening especially when your aways from home.
After about 500 miles and the sound not getting any better I contacted the rebuilder and he said to send it back. He sent me a prepaid shipping label for Fedex. (So I am not out any more money just time and effort and a couple of weeks without my car) He received it Friday Oct 19. I got an email on Oct 23 saying that it had been fixed and was on its way back. He said it had a bad 3rd gear. It should be here on Monday the 29th. He has apologized for the problems. After I get it back in and make sure all is Ok I will post the name of the rebuilder.
I've had that issue on several T5 . They whine slightly in 1st and get louder in 2nd and even louder in 3rd and disappears in 4th. The main culprit I found was the mainshaft was flogged where is goes inside the input [bearing] This is often overlooked on gearbox overhauls. When torque is applied in 3rd the gears try and grow apart .[the mainshaft cantilevers on the rear mainshaft bearing] If it is the input bearing or front countershaft bearing are worn, it will whine in all the lower gears. A bearing sleeve is the fix
I get a whine in first gear on mine and then a slight whine in second… No noise in third fourth or fifth. The biggest problem with non world class T fives is that,I am told, third gear is no longer available. When I had mine rebuilt, The shop told me to be very careful not to miss third gear from speed shifting or flogging it. Do you guys find this to be true? I hate when someone starts a thread like this and then never follows up with the final results. Well after the transmission was delivered I put it back in the car and everything seems OK. I haven't been able to drive it much but the noise in third gear is gone. Except for the original problem the rebuilder has been good to work with. He turned it around in a little over a day and paid for all of the shipping. I have decide to post his name because I believe he did a good job of standing behind his work. It didn't cost me anything but time and effort to get it redone. His name is Scott Peterson, Garage Motorsports in Vancouver WA.
Thanks for the info. I'm only about 200 miles from there and plan to put a T5 in my coupe. Good to know should I need his services.
