Hey guys, are the clipon style whitewalls a waste of time and money? They seem a little fiddly to fit perfect but once done they look great?
Like combing over a bald spot. No one will say anything, but they'll be thinking it's way wrong. Plus, they have been said to peel off over time. Wouldn't want yer money flying along the freeway, would ya?
Do a search on port-o-walls. There are very mixed opinions on the topic. Especially when used with radials.
On own experience, if not used on radials, then well they hold up... but on radials, the sides are softer, and they use to crack or "wobble", and in short time get ruined.
They look good to start with mine came away from the Tyre and discolored badly. I ran them on radials.
If your style of driving usually creates large trafficjams and honking motorists behind you, then they might work alright for you.
A buddy of mine used them they lasted about 1 hour and they tore off wile he was driving id say no go
Me too. I actually got about 2K miles out of the set, but eventually the one flew apart, and the others got dried out and chalky looking. I won't make that mistake again. If you're really on a tight budget and can't afford real WWW's, there are much better (and cheaper) alternatives to portawalls.
Try making a set of narrow white walls wide, Ive seen a few articles on this. Supposedly every white wall is wide inder the rubber. You just got to sand it away.
^^^^^What chevy said...It's called backyard or homemade whitewalls and if you've got a grinder and some time it's a cheap way to get some whitewalls you don't have to worry about flying off your ride. You can pick up a set of skinny whites pretty cheap and then slowly grind them down to expose the wide white strip. Won't be as nice as a set of Coker 3" whites, but you won't be paying anywhere near that either. I've done 2 sets, one for a '65 Coupe de Ville and one for a Caprice I built, and I got tons of compliments on em. Search youtube, there's plenty of videos on how to do it!
i ran them as a kid ! seemed fine for me , but never went over 55 mph then . if they are a quality pot-a-wall & you get them on correctly , they should do fine ... steve
take some rubber cement for glueing tire patches and glue them to your sidewall they wont blister or tear, they still look cheap because they are.
I'm showin' my age here, but in the late `50's and early `60's, lots of guys ran port-o-walls. Looked good ... at least from the stands. But I'm less confident they'd work on radial tires for reasons already discussed. They're available from www.koolrides.com a**** others no doubt. Gonna field test a pair in a few weeks and will let you know. Remember ... from the back of a galloping mule, it all looks pretty good.
i've had them before. they won't work on radials. they break off in chunks and come flying off while driving. never used them on bias ply.
