So I've been boo-hooing like a little girl for myself lately because I've never had a decent garage to work out of at home. Every house that I've lived in has had only a carport or old, undersized one car garage with totally dicked up, uneven floors. Yesterday, I took my Mig to a buddy's house to do some welding for him and he has no garage at all. Just a storage shed and a concrete/gravel pad. It was raining off and on the whole time. When I pulled up in the alley at home and my headlights hit the side of my shitty little garage, it looked like the Taj-Mahal. Maybe it was the way my lights hit it in the rain or the fact that I was able to unload my shit into a structure that has a roof and a door. Anyway...I stopped feeling bad for myself now and am actually thankful for my little shithole. I TOTALLY admire the fellas that build and work on their rides with next to no shelter at all. I know that there are a ton of you hardcore dudes out there so stand up and be recoignized!! I'd like to see your carports, driveways, gravel pads, tree winches etc. and the cars you've built there.

When I was a teenager learning this stuff in the late 70s, we had a little shed that we could work on engines/transmissions in, and the neighbors had a tall thing that we could put a come-a-long on for pulling engines. Everything was done on dirt, no concrete or gravel anywhere to work on.

My shop now is huge and well equipped and nice. I ain't goin back

I've got an carport that's enclosed on the offside with a garage door on the end. The other end is open, I got some heavy duty storm doors and I made a sliding glass wall. The side against the house has a gap over the side roof of the house, so I'm going to get some conveyor belting and use it as a sweep to close the gap but not stop the water from getting into the gutter. It may be butch, but it beats one of those tarp covered pvc things...:D

I used to work in my driveway (but neatly) a lot, but my city passed some new ordinances that pretty much nixed that....

    oh well, f- um.... :D

I just bought my first house and i have a 2 car attached garage! I feel like a king. Ive always laid out in the snow during the winter or the heat and sand now that im in florida. Painted my cutlass in my yard at 1am in the morning using lamps from the living room. Still better than snow.

I feel like I'm high livin' because my car is on some broken concrete/bricks now and not full on dirt!

I bought a leaf blower to clear out some of the black windows and leaves and dirt and stuff before I work underneath it.

I have a 10x16 shed that The Peter Beater fit in. Before that, I had an 8x8 that I worked out of. Michiigan winters and a roadster that I worked on outside.....yeah, it sucked. I'm gonna do it again IN the 10x16 this winter. I have to stock up on my propane tanks and heaters.
BTW, the Belly Flop (it's for sale) doesn't even come close to fitting in anything let alone my crappy well built and insulated shed.
Did I mention the Caddy's for sale? look here -->--V

I had over 2700 sq ft including storage loft before we left OR. Now in FL, I'm in an overstuffed 360 sq ft (allegedly) 2 car garage. It don't work!

The problem in OR was that I had collected SO much stuff, I was still working on the gravel driveway in the rain :-(

Right now, I have my eye on a used 25x25 metal building for cheap, trying to make a pay on time deal. A buddy does concrete and will help me with the site, foundation and floor.

Itys all good though... there isn't nearly as much stuff to be able to collect in FL as there was in OR.

  14. I work in a single car garage. The biggest problem is the drivway has quite an incline to it so I can't really push my truck in and out with out a couple of guys around to help get it back in.

When I was a teenager I worked in the dirt, pulled and installed engines with a comealong attached by a chain to big branch off big ole oaktree, chain is still in the branch completely grew around it. Now i'm working off a concrete slab in the backyard, have a shop, got tore up bad during the hurricanes in 05, still repairing it, hopefully have it done soon, rain messes me up alot, and the mosquitoes will carry you away down here.

Years ago I had a concrete pad under the deck on the house with a sliding door into the basement. I threw a blue tarp over the deck and built 2x4 frame and covered it wth plastic to make walls and extend it out from the deck to cover the Scout I was rebuilding. I used to open the sliding door for heat and all my tools were in the basement.
Now I have a 2-1/2 car Carriage shed that I use one bay becuase I have so much stuff, tools, motors etc . I need more space.

I got a garage, but it's filled with cars and bikes and shit, and there's no room to work. I work in my driveway, and occasionally move everything out to paint a car (Shhhhh!!)

You guys ever hear the Monty Python skit "Four Yorkshiremen"?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xe1a1wHxTyo

    Carports, garages, cement pads..
All I have to say is.. "luxury".

No garage. No car port. No pad.

But I do get to drag my parts inside a small "garage" my brother has, do my thing and then drag them out. At least it's there and I'm glad for it. No winter heat though (and this ain't Florida in the winter. ;) )

Well.. I have to get up a half hour before I go to bed so... off I go.

When I built my '48 Chevy p/u in 1998, I did the entire build outside on a gravel parking pad. All I had for a "shop" was an 8x10 shed to keep my tools and welder in.

The house we have now has a 12x20 garage. Heaven!! Still cramped for working in, but I've rearranged it enough that I can now access all 4 sides of the Essex. I'm currently working on adding a couple more light fixtures plus a couple more electrical outlets. One of these days when I get rich and famous we'll be building a 20x26 shop on the other side of the yard. For now, this will have to do...

For years I have built cars out in the driveway on gravel but now I have a small garage that is packed with projects. Maybe the driveway was better because I could focus on one car at a time.

Well how about this I have a decent sized shop 1 and 1/2 car building thanks to my Grandfather however it is 2 hours away from my apartment so I can only work on the weekends. (till I graduate in Dec. find a job and a place away from college)

  27. a buddy of mine has a 60x150 two story garage. Second floor is a complete apartment. There is a loft between the second and ground floors. He has 5 rolling hoists, and a paint booth.

Problem is... all the hoists are full. space under the hoists are full too. Damn near every square foot of 'garage' is filled.

He comes to my place to work on his stuff .

Since I'm full, he gets to use my concrete pad.
    Go figure.:D

I need to take some pics tomorrow so you can see my "landing strip" that I work in....a blacktop driveway about 12' wide and about 50 feet long. I end up taking up about 12 feet in front and in back of the car...w/enough room for the truck. We have to park the car on the street. I grew up with shops, carports, and sheds...then I moved up here to Dirty Jersey and never even thought about not having a garage until I bought a house that didn't have one! Now I'm forlorn :( What makes it even tougher is that even though I'm only 30, I was tough on my body in my teens, and it hurts like a mother fkr to be rolling around on the stony blacktop or down on my knees working on some brakes.

I just keep telling myself that when my ride is done and they see the spiffy rear end that I put in, the new open driveline, the motor/transmounts, the front end disc brakes, the rebuilt 283/th350, and all of the paint and body work....everyone will say to themselves "Gawdayum, you did all of THAT over THERE?" Or, at least, hopefully they will....if I don't smooch the pooch on it.

BTW, I have *yet* to get to the painting/body work.....
