who designed these damn things?

  1. i was about to go cruising on saturday night, i made it to the end of the block, and the car just quit. checked the carbs, no fuel. no problem, turn on the old SW electric in the back, and the car runs fine. i ***ume it is my carter mechanical pump that has gone bad. i pulled it apart, and nothing is wrong, bench tested it, and it works great.

Turns out the fuel pump pushrod wore itself out. i guess they can design one bad part on an otherwise perfect motor.... David

the one on the left is the old worn one, the right side one is a not so worn one. it was enough to make the fuel pump not pump fuel.

That was a way common problem on Ford ******s for awhile...it happens to other motors as well, but not nearly as often, and it CAN baffle the **** out of some driveway mechanics!

If I don't know an engine's history, I replace them (if the engine uses one) along with a new fuel pump for the sake of being sure! Usually when swapping in a used motor I haven't heard run!

That's a pretty well worn pushrod, if that much is missing... [IMG]

  4. those new ones from mopar wear out in about 20 minutes, i think i'll stick with used ones, they are tested and true! but seem to wear out every once in a while....
