Could fenders on open wheel cars be a trend?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I hate concept drawings. Anybody can draw anything, but actually go build it -- that's a challenge.

I'm not going to make this personal and get the thread closed... your statement is ignorant to say the least, however if it is your beleif that "anybody can draw anything" please by all means post something for us. I for one would love to see what you have come up with in terms of your representation of something that does not exist.

And you're not bursting anyones bubble, your opinion is your own and quite frankly no one asked you to express it. And it is just that an opinion, please do not present it as a fact, that is the definition of delusional.

    More of this Please!!!!!!!

If you place fenders on an open wheelcar does it cease to be an open wheel car.

Actually, I think I understand what he´s getting at. It´s quite possible to draw some cartoony looking concept sketch that looks fantastic. I always think that the trick is to try to look twice, and figure out how that sketch would actually look if you built it for real (you know, without the 30" wheels and no profile tyres, or Ed Roth teeshirt car proportions...). Thats why I favour artwork that´s as realistic as possible, otherwise it´s just too easy to kid yourself. You know what I mean?

Yes and no..I understand what you are saying because you A-R-T-I-C-U-L-A-T-E.
I disagree somewhat ...because a concept is what it is....conceptual.....to give an idea....a thought..to visualize a possible feeling of your idea.
Steve Stanford and chip foose can "concept better than most can induce speech..."..where(a hero to me). Tim Conder's concept may not be so polished and tuned... but the IDEA streams thru LOUD & CLEAR.....

  16. It's possible, but it's also really really difficult and takes a lot of effort, kinda like building a car :D

Great thread though there's some really nice stuff here!

I'm going to agree and disagree with Mr. Norwell on this one... the cartoony sketches/drawings/renderings are just that, cartoons. They were never meant to be built as scale copies of their representation. Are they fun to look at? HELL YES!!! Are they practical? HELL NO!!! Does that mean no one will ever try? Beats me. They can be used as an idea for a build, but in no way dictate the actual proportions or design of the build. The closest i've ever seen are the show rods, but even they are constrained by reality.

The difference is a rendering or concept drawing is creating something with actual design elements and more importantly based in reality. Guys like Foose, Stanford, even our own JEEM and Jeff are all amazing at this. You look at the drawings they do and they exude the essence and details of what could be created in reality with just the right skill set. It's been proven over and over as they're concepts have given birth to real hot rods and customs.

The ability to do this is not for everyone. I've been to design school and not even a eighth of the people i graduated with can do what these guys do. The concept is a blueprint, when i draw i draw to make something out of nothing. If i can represent what i want on paper first i know how to go about doing it in reality, form, function, design, engineering. Sure some can do it on the spot when actually building, but how many times will they change their mind before settling on something? If a builder knows exactly what he is going to do and knows what it should look like when he's done his job is much much easier. And that is where these guys come into play, they're more than just kids with markers, they're visionaries.

Thanks Jeff. When I got into this stuff as a kid there was a LOT of that "anybody can draw a car but BUILDING one is..." or the "Yep, he drew another impossible car..."

These days there is no such thing as an "impossible" design. You want Roth proportions? No problem. When it comes to anything that's "extreme" or "in your face" or "impossible", it just boils down to how bad a mother****er you are in the risk taking/design/fabrication department (as opposed to being "trendy", "popular", "rational" or "realistic.")

Most pro designers are aesthetic perverts who know everything looks better with a lower roofline, longer, more slender body, lower ride height and no unsightly manufacturing seams or license plates or mirrors or tires with tread or windows you can see out of....

Anyway, the "real" world screws all that cool !@#$ up. The best stuff always starts with loose, radical ideas. Sky's the limit thought. BADASS !@#$. Then, it's beat down and rounded off so it can materialize for the many nice folks who will ultimately buy it. It's tragic really...

It's not much of a stretch to take something that already exists and then smooth it off and lower it. Just for fun, try forgetting everything you think is "right". Blast your stereo and rack your brain for something so !@#$ing bad the hairs on your neck stand up.

Who cares what "they'll" think? Who cares if "it'll SELL"??? Let 'em roll over in their mohair and shake in their hush puppies. Try it, it's reeeeeeally fun...

I agree with Conder. The only thing holding back construction of any oddball design is $$$. Whether or not it'd be practical or just sculpture is another discussion.

I don't have anything to add to the discussion, except to offer kudos to everyone for having the most articulate discussion I've seen on the HAMB to date. :D

I draw constantly, because I get ideas in my mind's eye that I need to get down before I lose that concept. While it is great to work with "real" materials and build the real thing as an ongoing sculpture, for me the point of these drawings is to get a record of what was in my head before it disappears and then to be able to go on and refine it, change it, try out different things. For someone like Chip Foose who has a team of people ready to build his ideas, surely the point of the concept drawing is to communicate his fertile ideas to the team of people who will be doing the actual work, and to get each of them working towards Chip's ideas, instead of what each of the individuals sees in his own mind. Leonardo DaVinci made great "Concept Drawings"...of stuff like helicopters and bicycles, long before the materials existed to actually build those ideas. Definitely the challenge to build those was huge, but without the idea, and a way to articluate that idea to a team of others, these great projects don't move forward.
