Tommy McCray has been reading the HAMB for a couple years and ran at the HAMB Drags last year, but he never Posts. I think he is computer illiterate [IMG]

Anyway, here's his old HenryJ and its been a Gasser since the early 60's. He was running a 301 Chevy with 4 dueces, but I think he switched to a single quad now.

    I'm working on one! [IMG]

No pics tho'.... just a WHOLE LOT of parts rounded up. But that's good, I'm getting closer to the actual build.

But picture this in your mind...

'40 Ford P'up, flat black paint. No hood, gotta show off the big, bad Olds engine. But more on that later. Top is chopped maybe 3-1/2 inches from the stock height. But, custom touch by me-- front windshield section is from a '40 passenger car because it slopes back more (kind of like a competition chop) and it starts off the cowl a little sooner than on the P'up. The back of the cab above the beltline will be smooth-back with a longer rear window by utilizing a clip out of a '36-7 or '38-9 P'up. I like the smooth-back cab instead of the big ugly body seam on the '40-up P'ups. Bed shortened maybe 6". An aluminum cover pan on top, held on by Dzus fasteners. It's got louvers in it. Haven't decided what to do about the tailgate yet. Rear fenders are the teardrop fenders from an early Chevy/GMC P'up-- similar to the Ford fenders, but subtly different. They are more muscular looking from the rear since they don't pinch downward before meeting the bed like the Ford fenders do. This will give more clearance to the tires mounted on 16x10 big-window Halibrands. Front wheels also large-kidneybean Halibrand mag's (these the skinny bolt-on's that are so tough to acquire). '39 Ford deluxe teardrop headlights and taillights. Peep mirror on the side. Drip rail shaved, hidden hinges, but leave the stainless door handles on there, they look good. Now on to the engine. 450 CID 394 Olds topped off by a Littlefield 6-71 blower and a Hilborn 4-port injector. Yep, gonna run mechanical injection on the street. Won't get far on a tank of gas, but a gasser just has to be NASTY. Gonna spin the blower as hard as possible and also run race gas (yes, gas-- it's a gasser, remember those?) so I can mess up my internal organs and get busted for illegal fuel on the public street. But like I said, a gasser just has to be NASTY. Finned aluminum no-name valve covers. Other subtle aesthetical touches in the engine bay such as removing any names from any parts (a no-name engine bay). Also have an idler pulley with kidney-bean shaped slots to match the Halibrand wheels. Ditto for an RCD crank hub with degree ring that has kidney bean slots in it. Pulleys are 13.9/14.0mm because the teeth match the fins on the Hilborn scoop and on the valve covers---plus it allows me to use a kevlar belt instead of a rubber belt. Heavily modified cylinder heads. Custom internals for the engine that I can't talk about right now. Shooting for 800+HP on blown gas and I think that's well within reach. B&M hydro, Olds/Pont rear. 35mm spool in the rear. Mark Williams yokes so I can use big U-joints. Wilwood disk brakes front and rear, but with the long-discontinued Dynalite III calipers that looked so darn good (smooth cast caliper, polished, with no external balance tubes that look ugly). Front axle might just possibly be a stock Ford beam axle with--you guessed it-- kidney bean slots in it. The slots must be long enough that a tow rope can be looped through. Hand-made (by me) stainless version of the factory Ford grille, a la the one that Ron Covell made for that black '40 that was in Street Rodder. Interior kind of sparse, just a simple chrome tube steering column, Moon gages and tach in a cup on the dash, black vinyl covered bucket seats from an early Econoline or A100 van (what was used in the Super Stock and AF/X cars). B&M gated competition hydro shifter, simple black knob on the shifter. Cage with headrest pad. Small chrome handheld halon fire extinguisher (there will also be an onboard system that will be well-hidden, I am no fool).

If you still got your eyes closed, then turn the key and let that bad boy bark to life. Snort out onto the road, busting the tires loose around every corner to keep the axles alive in a spooled rear, and watch people point and smile. They are reading the lettering on the blower scoop that says "450 CID Oldsmobile"... [IMG]

the yellow Henry J is cool but I would not call it a gasser, It may be a straight axle but the nose is to low and the rear tires way to wide.. Needs to put the front end up and put narrower tires on it. A inch or three inches out is cool, 12 is not... IMHO... Tje black primer willys in the new Old Skoolz issue is the same way.. The rear tire is to big for the look.

He first built that car back in the early 60's as an Altered and held the AHRA record for a year or two. As far as I know, it was never "Nose High", but that doesn't mean its not the real deal.

I don't like the Tires poking out that far either, but he did it on purpose. Said he wanted a 70's look. I would say he succeeded [IMG]

Well I built this and drove it for two summers and put over 16,000 miles on it. I sold it to finance my next project.

And this is my new project that I have to get off my ass and start working on again.

The motor is just a 540 BBC with 660 hp.

See, I've even got streetrod steering on this baby.

When I get working on this pig, I'll update you guys with some new pictures.

My wife walked by while I had the picture up posting it and she about cried. She still hasn't forgiven me for selling it.

After my wife and I got back to Michigan after we participated in the first Ego Rama, Fab32 threw us a party for doing what others probably wouldn't do. We drove the old Willys 6,520 miles in just 23 days including temps well over 100 degrees. We only had an alternator problem but we made the whole trip just the two of us in the Willys. We had a great time. Tex Smith met us in Jackson WY. and gave the group a special tour through Yellowstone. I sat with him and his boy for lunch and Tex sure had some great stories.

Enough of that, thanks for the nice comments.

    Some neat stuff being posted.

But did you know that not all gassers were nose-high or had the tires sticking out in the back? That was typical, but they weren't all that way.

The Energizer Willys was, and is, down low. And Hot Rod (?)magazine once had a feature article in the early '60's of a Willys coupe with a 394 Olds in it that was not noce high, and the tires were inside the fenders.

If your definition of a gasser is straight axle then no, but if your definition of gasser is short wheel base, "exciting" handling and fast then I got one...
