Yeah - so your ride looks a little more C/MP than C/GS. I actually thought briefly about trying to use some of the stock front suspension under my Rambler, but the only way I can see to do it and have room for a 383 would be to attache a transverse leaf to the lower control arms/crossmember like a 'Vette.

I think the tube axle will look much cooler.

I thought about the DJ-5 (keeping it in the AMC family, right?) but I may bite the bullet and use an aftermarket unit. Just gettin' too hard to find the old Econoline axles any more. I wonder what's under the front end of 2wd Suzuki Samurais...

Dave - The Sammi's had a straight axle from 90-95 with the 5x5.5" pattern, leaf springs, & disc brakes.

Austin A40 P/U. 354 Hemi, twin Carters, Powerglide etc etc. This is a club car, costs and work shared between six of us. It'll see strip use only.

    Artiki,
I love Austins, if I could buy all the cool rides I would like to have, I'd have to buy more sand here in Florida to park all of them.
Keep us posted on your progress.

    59Ford,
Gotta love them Chevy II's and Shoe-box Chev's, emagine if a guy could get all of these "Way-Cool" Gasser style rides all togather at a Old 1/8 mile drag strip for a couple of days of "Bench Seat Racing" and some "Instant Green" old style drag racing... What a blast it woould be!

Hell.. This is just great !
Listen... a while back I saw a picture of a 64 GTO with the gasser style front end. The guy was race'n the car someplace on the West Coast.. Anybody have a picture of this car that they could post?

"I know dear, I building you a 67 GTO cruiser car but wouldn't it look nice as a gasser?"

  18. Wow! A pic of "No Big Thing"! That was quite a crowd pleaser for many years at U.S.30 Drag Strip in northwest Indiana.

I watched that car do quarter mile wheelstand runs. It was a 4 wheeled hand grenade.

A few years ago that car was fully restored and showed at Chicago's WoW, after sitting dormant outdoors.

That car has alot of historical value to Chicagoland drag racing. Thanks for sharing.

    AHotRod,
Try and get hold of a copy of the UK's Custom Car magazine, March 2004 edition. There are more photos and quite a write-up on the Austin.
There's a nostalgia-only drag meet in England in September that we're hoping to get some shake-down runs in at.

This is the picture that we look at for inspiration.

    Irvin Gill...
Bowmanville Ont CAN, circa 1962 , My hero as a lad ...
Bought a 62 Chevy 2drHT with factory 409 option, took it drag racing and won the Canadian Superstock trophy that year.
Well in 63 he pulled the engine and built a 55 chev2dr B/GAS
and won the national title as well (409 powered)!!
Used to flat tow it to Cayuga drag strip @ 6.30 am in the morning behind the 62 (now 283 powered). 30 miles from the drag strip on the HWY 401 freeway they used to unhook the gasser and give the 62 a minutes head start to the track. Man he was a legend!!

  28. good god! I had no idea there were so many gasser guys on here ,off site they think we are a bunch of flat black hudlums w foul mouths,LOL, KEEP EM comin ! I'm puttin em up on my gasser site (unless there are objections)by others + so they may be veiwed after this post dies (if it ever does ,lol)I know of 15 gassers going together right here in MN.as we write this.
Can a real nostalgis old school Gasser class be far off? as of now no NHRA track here will allow em to run other than brackets. and not at all unless updated.Prolly never happen.

Between the Gasser-Style and A/FX cars being built right now, there should be a decent showing of high-riding, straight-axle doorslammers at any nostalgia drag meet. I don't know that NHRA or IHRA will step up to revitalize a "Match Race" class especially for these cars, but they can always run the bracket classes.

I think we'll start seeing more and more old-school gassers running in the index classes at nostalgia meets - it's just that sometimes they'll be matched up against cars that don't quite look the part.

From what little personal experience I have, I can say that on days when the guys with more modern chassis are having problems hooking up, the gassers will usually stomp all over them. On days where the track is "choice," the gassers will be at somewhat of a disadvantage, but will look a heck of a lot cooler.
