Ya need a notch above the cap tall enough to be able to pull the dist. up and out,and that is going to be around 4 to 5 in.,so dose not matter how much the wires 90* stick up. Nothing is as bad as latter finding out you can't work on your motor with out pulling it out:eek: same gose for valve covers/heads that I see put up in to a fire wall too close, bet them guts feel stupid later.;)

Those caps are not designed to use boots, so you can't do a 90° out of them.

I want a slick looking fire wall. Might not make sense to some but.... I made easy axis to the body mount bolts. Un bolt body, jack up body off frame. remove distributor.

you still need enough room to pull the cap off atleast in case you need to replace the cap, rotor and points some day. The wires come out about 1.5 inches above the cap might be able to get them closer if you bend them really tight but you take the chance of messing the wires up.

Honestly, that sounds like a great idea right now, but make the notch deep enough to pull the distributor... This is the voice of experience speaking.

Tried to add info with an edit but it wouldn't work so be prepared that it would require you to go to a newer distributor as the chance of finding a usable one for a YJ or YL distributor like you have is doubtful.

If you go in a different direction, let me know b/c I'm looking for another Mallory cap. Prefer the original brown, but black would do....

  17. You'll need to remove more than one and this sounds like a great idea until you think it all the way thru.

Haven't we all, in the SBC crowd at least, looked for that extra 1/4 inch of clearance? Doug Juonis of the NSRA Safety Inspectors, made his own water pump, no doubt very short, to gain clearance.

    Ok...you want a slick firewall..
Since you are still in construction mode....why not build a large enough recess to be able to pull the distributor.
Then fab up a slick cover that is easily removable. Maybe held in place with studs on the backside and wingnuts ??
    Heck..thinking about it a little,
Why not make the recess a little wider and taller than needed and hide the coil etc in there..really clean up the engine compartment. .

I diddent want random bolt heads sticking out the dash... welding a stud to the inside of the firewall with a removable cover inside the dash is a great idea! I will definitely do that. Thanks man.

here's a pic of the YC-465 HP Mallory on my small block. I'd leave 4-5" for wires.
