I've got both a 225, that's balanced, blueprinted, .100 over, ported, etc, etc; waiting for a rod project or HAMB rail recipient, and a 170 totally stock also waiting for my three current projhects to clear the door before I put them in something. But I will get them done. There are both slant sixes; the leaning tower of powers that they are!

Building a '40 Chev coupe with 292, Muncie M20, 9 inch. Clifford intake, 600 Holley, Hooker headers, HEI, etc.

Note to V8 doods: Don't knock six bangers till you've experienced one. Generally they're not high revvers but make buckets of low end torque, which is what moves the car. I know a few guys that race 'em and run 'em on the street. In a 3000 lb. car a well built 292 or 302 Jimmy drives like a healthy small block. Some of the stock car racers spin 'em 8500+.

I'm building a punched out 300 cubic inch (now 305) ford sixer with ported and polished (by me) heads, 351 windsor pistons, a .541 lift cam, a custom multi carb intake and headers, looking for 400 or more ponies out of it. It's slated for my 67 stang but that could change if a cheap hot rod project becomes available.

Oh yea, and with the valvetrain I'm installing I shoudl be able to turn almost 7 grand

I looked through this thread and I think I might be the only one building a 196 OHV Rambler motor. Back in the day they put one in an Indy car that was 700 horse.

I was wondering, way I hear it the engine had so much torque it kept twisting the car in half.

I have a run-out 250 in my '78 Chevy Stepside. Zero to 60 in a couple of minutes. Burns more oil than gas. However....I have a good plan... He he he! :) :) :)

I'm a real fan of straight 6's. My Dad was a Chevy 6 man till '64. I've attached some images of a cool vintage racer with a Chevy 6, Wayne cross-flow head and Weber carbs.

My '27 Essex pickup is running a 225ci slant-6/auto. It's not fast, but it's super reliable and easy on fuel.

  23. OK Hudsonator long time passed, plenty of water under the
bridges so to say...But here goes: Now I decided what to do
and I did that with the help of a computer dyno-program,
I tested 3 different combinations based on the 258 and 4.0
    from AMC/Jeep.

They all share the same carb, intake, exhaust a ported head
and camshaft since these parts is already in my shop, and I
tought it could be fun to compare what will happen with
    different sizes on the engines.

    I started with a stroker : 4.0 block /258 crank and rods,
this combo ends up att 276.5 cu.in. and the comp.-ratio
is 9.6 with stock cast pistons. On the computer it showed
287 hp and over 300lb/ft of tq from aprox.1800 rpm
    with a top-score of 328 lb/ft @ 4300 max HP is at
5000 rpm,a downside with this example is that it makes
a kind of suicidal dive in power after 5300 and @ 5700
    it's totally dead.
It would surely benefit of a bigger camshaft but the one
I got is one of the biggest as far as hydraulic goes.

The 258 with .060 overbore is 266 cu.in. and with the
same parts it will produce a bit more HP but will loose
    some Tq ,with a comp-ratio of 10.5 the dyno-program
showed just over 300 hp @ 5500 rpm and Tq landed
in the 280-290 lb/Ft area @ 4800.This combo also takes
a nose-dive 4-500 rpms after it's top but not as much as
the stroker did and it holds on a little bit longer so the
camshaft works better in that one.

But since a 27 roadster with a fiberglass-body is kind of
    light-weight and my rear-end is geared 4.10:1 I tought
it would be better of with more revs and that it don't need
that much of Tourqe to survive so I tested a combination
of the 258 block bored .060 and the crank and rods from
    the 4.0 liter Jeep-engine this ends up as a 225,6 cu.in-engine,
comp-ratio is the same as the stroker and of course it lost
both HP and Tq due the smaller displacement but on the other
end it has potential to make some serious revs, and that can
be fun as long as it don't fall apart with that nasty bang we
all love to hear. The HP on this combo is aprox 270 at 6000
rpms and the Tq is down to a max of 260-270 @ 5500 ,
but the fun thing with this is that it keeps the power up much
longer ,"no nose-dive here" and at 7500 rpms it still shows
230 hp and @ 8000 it's still alive and should produce almost
200 hp,but it will take more of a man than me to rev a inline 6
to that level without some major balancing-work on the engine.

So what to choose :a stroker that pulls like a bus and revs like a diesel or a destroked smaller engine that can make noise all the way up to 8000 rpm,for me the answer is clear:if it blows at 8200 rpms there's always more parts out there to build a new one...

I'm still seeking an aluminum head for ANY flathead six or eight for a project. I don't really care the make but I'd prefer a MOPAR if possible.

  27. I expect a GMC 302 with a Wayne head would be a hell of a hot rod motor. On the sprint car circuit a Wayne GMC would give V8 Chevy's all they wanted back in the early 60's.

The engine is the creation of Earl Edgerton of California. I do believe it is indeed a 1 of 2 deal. It is found in his Bonneville crewchief's Dodge Pickup Truck. I pirated this from Blueskies posting on another forum.

And here is his bonneville motor
