I installed a 90+ furnace and central AC in my friends shop that I work out of. Its great, and keeps out the bugs. My shop at home is in the lower part of an old barn, it stays cool due to constant cool ground temps in Wisconsin, I run a dehumidifier when its muggy. The place has upgraded windows and insulation, we've been in the 90's for weeks now, and its 75 and comfortable in the shop. Nice mancave, Mark

115 in the shop today. FUN.

I dont think I could afford to run an air conditioner, I dont think it would shut off.

I just keep saying to myself......Self, sweat makes you stronger.

  6. With the AC (or heat) running hold a ribbon or piece of paper in front of vents. If the ribbon/paper blows toward garage you are OK. If one is sucking the ribbon/paper in you have a return from the garage. That will introduce any air (clean or not) from your garage into your home. You should block any return. If your HVAC installer is a pro he probably did not install a return from the garage.
If you don't smell gas, oil or solvents you are probably OK. I would recommend installing some carbon monoxide sensors in your home just to be safe, they can alert you to problems with gas stoves, water heaters and furnaces too.

Hell Fire or my shop it is 2500 sq ft of heat. I found a package unit that is 3 phase and I thinks about 5 tons soon as it cools off this jewel is going in the shop.Hate to say I am just getting to old. The bondo dust concerns me so I will build a filter box or something !

Hotter n hell and humid here in Illinois; 2 weeks ago I finally installed a 5000BTU window unit in our well insulated 24X28 garage. The humidity is now 47% and the temp 80 - 81. I It feels great !! If I wanted it cooler, I would have a larger unit. The efficiency sheet that came with the unit says average cost of operation is $41. per year !!

I have a 3 ton unit on my 20X40 w/ 12' ceilings. I turn in on and pretend i live somewhere nice. I just heard next weeks forcast...103, 105, 105, 106, 103 for the five day. I've done it both ways and I get much more done in my shop with ac. I like traditional cars but I don't need to build them with 40's hand tools either.

  10. My garage is relatively small, 18x26 with a 10 foot cieling, and I just installed a window unit in the wall. I went to Lowes last year in the fall/winter when they put all the summer stuff on sale and purchased a window unit to install in a framed up hole through the wall. It works like a champ, we just went through a period where we had 28 days over 90* and the humidity was unbearable.

. . . of course I haven't seen my electric bill yet either .

That would be nice right about now, wouldn't it...

  13. I have heat for the winter, but No AC, I need to loose some weight, so I figure that I can sweat it off in the garage.

Yea I have Central Air and Heat in my garage, Born and raised in South Texas so I figured I finally earned it.

  15. Was passing by a house one afternoon and saw a BIG window AC unit that was sitting at the curb with a big "FREE - IT WORKS" sign on it and figured that I'd take the chance... I wouldn't have it any other way!!! If I turn on the AC first thing in the morning on a hot muggy Saturday, it'll keep the garage reasonably cool all day. If I come home from work and its already hot out there (the garage gets ZERO shade during the day) it'll feel good when you're standing in front of it at the workbench, but forget about the rest of the garage. I also found a really ugly ceiling fan at the cub once too, and that at least keeps the air moving and keeps the mosquitos off of you!
