Had a four post in my garage with 10 ft ceiling. I could get an S10 up to the ceiling but had to bend my legs some when working under it. I could have cut a hole in the ceiling and boxed and drywalled it so it would go higher.............but I opted for a pole barn with 12'6" ceiling. Then I sold the 4 post and got a 2 post. Each has their own good points. If I could only have one (which is all I do have), I prefer the 2 post because its so open underneath.

So the point simply is that if someone doesn't have 12' ceilings, make a box shaped hole in your ceiling and put some drywall up. Then get whichever lift you prefer. I would not consider putting any lift permanently outdoors without some type of roof over it, and only if I lived somewhere with moderate winter temps even then.

Guys...........If you get a lift you will love it...........I even sleep with mine sometimes.:)

I don't have one in my shop but I do have a 9,000 2 post outside. Have a good customer that has given me 4 post, think I will let a buddy have it for his garage.

A buddy of mine did box in and change the support structure over his hoist when he was working on raised roof people hauler vans every day.
I'd have to have a hoist set up outside if I had one now as my one car "shed" isn't big enough to work in let alone have a hoist in it.

One thing I did wrong was frame the garages to be 12' tall, but I forgot to factor in the thickness of the sheetrock so there is nice round piston hole on each side in the ceiling above the lift. Measure twice, remember you are not a carpenter, f' up anyway.

A wise friend of mine who collects Buicks, told me "It's cheaper to go up than out". He has about 10 4 post lifts for storage.

I would have already bought a 4 post if my garage floor didn't have a 4 degree down hill pitch !

I've thought of different ways to combat this by either Jack hammering out a couple squares and pouring an elevated concrete pad for the rear posts to sit on or drill several holes in the current concrete floor, drive re-bar down into them, then pour the elevated pad around the re-bar.
Either way the floor would have a couple permanent pillars sticking up and the lift would be locked into that position.

Some of the lift manufacturers have a calculator on their website that you can figure out what will fit based on your ceiling height, vehicle heights, and lock height of the lift. Direct Lift has the calculator for sure.

Pretty sure he was inquiring what brand you purchased.

A friend had a sloped floor, he had steel spacers made for under the lift legs of his 4-post . It worked well for him. I also wonder if you could shim the legs to level them and then adjust the cables to lift the bed level?

Wasn't my point to brag. :D:D I knew I wasn't the only one.
I got caught up in seeing others stack cars . Cheaper than adding onto building.
Not bragging but being debt free I guess I got caught up in easy payments.
That how's I bought my first lift plus air compressor then a tire machine.
Thanks to the Hamb I'm spending money on things I don't really need.:p:p:p
Hot deal threads plus seeing other people's stuff is going to put me back in debt. :)
I just bought 2 purple spray guns and 4 grinders.:eek::eek::eek:

2 Post and a 4 Post lift here as well
The 4 post is used mostly for maintenance and storage. My garage has high ceilings with 16 ft high ceilings so using a lift works out really well.

At 57 years old I went from gr*** to concrete slab to attached garage. 21 years ago I moved into this shop.
I have never had a heated garage. It's took all these years to gather all the tools.
Finally at a point in my life that I can afford things. I've earned it.
I've been in hvac 31 years. Owned my own company 18 years.
This will be my first year with a heated garage.
For the younger guys it will happen for you. You just have to work for it.

I do have to say that my four post lift is likely the best tool I have ever bought myself as far as value. It really wasn’t all that expensive as compared to lots of things and it sure makes working on this old stuff easier than rolling around on the floor. I got mine about 5 years ago after I built my shop with high enough ceilings to have one.

I have four lifts. All occupied by unfinished projects. I will be getting this one down soon. Finish welding, plating and painting and then moving to my show room. 2023-12-10 11.47.57-1.jpg

I have an old 4 post outside that I use alot and bang my head on alot too! As soon as I get the 40 foot boat out of my shop the plan all along has been to put a 2 post inside the shop. 18ft from floor to bottom of trusses so no problem with height.
Any reccomendations on brand or capacity, etc?
